    Evening all,

I currently have the pleasure of working for a company at which I do not pay Tax or NI at source.

Can anyone with experience of such an arrangement advise how they went about sorting the NI side of things? Chaps onboard suggest calling up 'saying the right thing' and I can pay class 2. I'm not too concerned about the long term side-effects of paying lower NI, as I am only in this employment for a short time.

    Many thanks!

Sorry meant class 3, not 2, and for info it's a Bermuda flag ship, Guernsey company.

You don't need to call them, photo copy your discharge book, copies of your contract and payslips and attach to the form on the link below, fill it in and post it to them, they'll reply after a few months with "You qualify for voluntary contributions give us xxx to make last year count." (Tax year being April to April)

You can do it for more than 1 year if you haven't paid in previous years, just use multiple forms as required. Each year is usually around ?180 - ?200 it varies slightly.

And for the record, there is no side affect of paying the lower rate as a seafarer - you still qualify for the pension after you have amassed enough years.

Tell HMRC if you're an offshore worker, seafarer or mariner and get advice about your National Insurance contributions.

On a side note, if you have previously being paying NI and changed employment mid year, HMRC will contact you automatically if you haven't paid enough to make that year count.
?Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn?t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.?

Can you still get that low rate for an IoM flagged ship, Singapore based employer?
