Interesting question, but how did you end up at sea, who or what encouraged you and what was your motivation?

Decided I hate computers and it seemed a good idea at the time.?Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn?t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.?

Well, like I said elsewhere, a recruiter promised me wine, women and song and what not....I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.....

The recession meant my previous employment became untenable, I was given notice my contract would not be renewed and I needed to find something that would be less dependent on budget vagaries. That, coupled with my distaste for office based employment didn't leave me with many options.
As it turns out my former boss left, meaning I would have been promoted and my job would have been secure. Hindsight is a bitch.
On the plus side I'm now earning twice my previous salary.

I was mid way through A levels, decided I wasn't enjoying them (very stupid at the time) and met a guy in the pub who said "get yourself to sea lad"... He had worked at sea and retired so knew what he was talking about. I applied to all companies online, and a small company in Wales invited me for interview. Very little competition for the job meant that I ended up getting it. I hated the first few months at sea for various reasons but ended up loving it after that. I didn't tell my parents until the last minute that id dropped out of school and was going to sea...

I was 16, having passed all the assessments for the RAF I turned down a flying scholarship! My father was in the RAF, and knowing that 70% of pilot officers fail to quality and only 10% of those that pass fly fighters (meaning 3 in 100 fly fast jets) I looked around and thought "am I in the top 3 of the people here?" decided no so turned them down. If I did not want to fly a desk as an officer in the RAF but wanted to travel and had a love of navigation..... it was an easy choice...
