  • New security certificates

Does anyone know what is required by the new security courses. The M notice regarding it is a bit hard to understand.

I don't currently need a a certificate as I am working on non ISPS workboats, but I want to keep my self qualified for work on larger ships in future.

All crew members working on board applicable vessels require training in "Security Awareness" (IMO Course 3.27). Persons who have security duties designated under the ships security plan (usually all qualified officers, people dealing with stores etc, gangway watchmen, etc.) require "Proficiency in Designated Security Duties" (IMO Course 3.26). It's an either / or situation, if you have 3.26, you don't require the "lesser" 3.27 (on a side note the sylabus for each is pretty much the same).

Having had to deliver the bloody thing to 400+ people onboard in space of a week before it became mandatory (gotta love how companies were on top of its implementation), I can pretty much do it in my sleep, majority is common sense.

All I will say if you are doing it off your own back, don't use Glasgow Maritime Academy - company sent me there as it was only place with space - load of crap - basically day and half spent watching a powerpoint presentation on somali pirates.... course I was delivering onboard from a proper training centre was far superior.

Anyone who holds the Ship Security Officer certificate is obviously not required to hold either of the above as the ship security officer is a higher level.

Ok so I'm better of doing the designated security duties one as I'm likely to have duties in the SSP at some point.

Something that I have not been able to determine, if you hold a Ship Security Officer cert does that exempt you? Would be interesting to know.

I did some kind of multiple choice test thing on my last ship which was supposed to do the trick, I also pretended that I had done some training. Still haven't heard anything back, will have to contact them before I join my next ship.

I did the Seagull two CBTs onboard my last ship which included a lengthy workbook I had to scan and email off to them. Didnt here anything for ages, but finally got my certificate from them.

Other guys onboard just seemed to have done the two CBTs without the workbook and still passed so hhmmm.

I just got given a certificate and was told because I had been with the company for over 6 months I was exempt from additional training.
It was all news to me at the time.

So I have had a few issues recently where crewing officers have been a bit unsure on this point. I received an email today from the MCA agreeing with you that an existing STCW Ship Security Officer certificate negates the need/can be used in lieu of a Security Awareness certificate.

Received my Certificate today, wrong date of birth and mt name spelt wrongly, DOH!

The company are having it re-issued, but in the mean time I am stuck with that one.

If the company applied before the end of 2013, and said you had been doing security duties previously, the MCA would give you a certificate. However I didn't see that until a M Notice that came out in the beginning of November 2013. So wasn't perticaly useful to those of us with slow moving office people, who take a couple of months to react to anything. That M Notice even stated, the international law came in to effect 1st January 2012 (not 13 I think it was) but the MCA would not be enforcing it until January 2014. Needless to say no one on my vessel had the certs, and it still getting sorted out now.

Only deck officers and ABs are getting either designated duties or security officer training. The engine department has been sent just on security awareness training. And from those who have already done it, its just basically a half day or full day course that is identical to what should be covered in security drills. Nice little money maker by all means.

They've also come back and said a load of people who trained thirty plus years ago, who never did social responsibility courses now need to go back and do them, despite being at sea for more then 30 years. Which is a bit of a joke.
