  • Anyone here working/have worked general cargo?

A well known company is recruiting but I had a look at the rotations (10 weeks on 5 weeks off) for £27500. The offer seems a bit below market rate for what us probably long hours and not much time home. Is there any other incentive/benefit to sticking with them?

For general cargo that is just the going rate. That's probably a bit more than other general cargo 2/O jobs and I think it's the company I worked at before. You can get good experience on them (short term) if you are NQO and promotion is much quicker (long term) if you like it and plan on sticking around.

I done a trip and would have been happy to stay on them a while only I got offered a much better paid job elsewhere as a 2/O with a better rotation.

Would recommend doing general cargo if you can't find anything else if only for the experience you'll gain.

Scotline is the company, yeah its not so much the pay but the 10:5 week rotation being a hard pill to swallow. I'm more used to a 1:1 leave. I've been offered deckhand work with promotion to 2nd mate later for the same wage with 1:1 leave and if broken down as a day rate its far better. But obviously not getting time in rank, at least not yet.

Really depends on your outlook. If you are just focused on money, then yes this isn't the job for you - but the folk I've known who work trades like this end up getting promoted quickly, good responsibility and get into ports around Europe fairly regularly compared with deep sea or ferries/offshore.

My two cents; take the job. You can leave after one trip and call it 10 weeks of freelance work.

oh right fair enough, personally I do want to try and stay with offshore though. the pay, rotations and general level of safety seems a lot better and MLC rest hours are complied with. the downside being the scenery is often crap (Aberdeen and oil rigs). Money and rotations is an important thing for me, and I want to get myself settled in something. Main reason I wanted to go into this line of work to begin with. Judge away!

General cargo I would say is better experience that is looked on more favourably than off shore stand by vessels.

After my trip with scotline I was offered a job with good pay and 3 week on/off rotations

I've not sailed with Scotline, but I have sailed with other Western European based general cargo operators. Apart from small research vessels then it is probably the work that I enjoy the most, however it is not the best paid but in my view it gives good experience. When I spoke to Scotline many years ago then they told me they would respect the 10 weeks on system, some other operators do push the boundaries in that regard. What I have found with other operators is they are reasonably flexible with time off, which can be useful for doing courses, study and family holidays where other family members may have to book time off well in advance.

On another note, a friend of mine who is 2nd officer on Ferryspeed's Musketier is looking for a reliever for about 6 weeks starting late July. I've been on the vessel myself in the past, it's container runs between Portsmouth Guernsey and Jersey. You'd usually have the weekend in port in Portsmouth. Drop me a line if anyone is interested, Newly Qualified Officers are most welcome. Just find me on social media, linkedin facebook etc and I can put you in touch.

Looks like a great opportunity - were I still at sea I'd take it up. Hopefully someone gets in touch with you
