  • Need help finding a job after qualifying

    Hey,

I qualified as an engine officer recently but not had much luck finding a job so far. I am regularly checking job sites like sea mariner, genesis, sea careers, etc. as well as emailing people but jobs that fit my experience and qualifications rarely come up. I find that even the entry level jobs for many companies ask for experience which is annoying and cadet time unfortunately doesn't count.

What were your experiences when trying to find your first job after qualifying?
Any tips in finding a job?

    Thanks

I had the same problem, qualified in Sepember and was on the hunt for what felt like ages. I finally got myself an interview with the RFA just before christmas, and I got offered the job with them. They understood the situation I was in (having no qualified experience), and said its a common problem with new officers. Have you tried applying to them?

Call the agencies on at least a weekly basis.
      Go out, do stuff

Yep, the RFA are recruiting engineers - give them a call

Do the RFA use smart funding for their cadets? Or tap the military budget?

They don't use smart, they don't have a problem with CI or IOM either.
They employ their cadets on salaries, where as under smart you are not employees I have a strong recollection that smart doesn't allow you to be employees, or be an apprentice.

Which agencies are these Clanky? It's sometimes hard to distinguish between agencies and job boards.

Indeed, RFA cadets are employed and make NI, PAYE and pension contributions. Doesn't sound much but starting a pension at 16/17 years old is a pretty good thing in my eyes.

There are 10 or more decent agencies, mentioned several times in other threads.

The usual suspects (I'm out of the UK now so some sites won't let me see vacancies to check but...) try:

seamariner, nuwave, fast stream, Viking (jobs at sea) etc
                      Pilotage - It's just a controlled allision
