Are there many careers in ship stability?

Hi
I am in my fourth phase of FD deck and am considering a career to do with ship stability.
I have really enjoyed the stability lessons in phases one and three, and I wish to continue it further. However I have found that you may only do an additional course when you have a mates or masters ticket, Is this true?
Also what kind of jobs may this lead to, ship surveyor is one I can think of.

Ship Surveyor's don't normally involve themselves in ship's stability. Normally it's inspections of the vessel itself and/or cargo surveying.

I know the MCA have a stability team as do most of the class societies (think ABS's RRDA) but other than that there isn't really much else that I can think of off-hand...

I don't think they have one officer dedicated to stability, but having never worked on them and only briefly seen a budget for one, I wouldn't know....

Ballast control on offshore semi subs and the likes?

I often see Stability/Ballast Officer vacancies for FPSO's, rigs, Semi-Subs etc on Genesis/Seamariner website, minimum tends to be Chief Mate Unlimited, occasionally Master Unlimited in addition to several specialist stability exams.

Thanks for those, I didnt think about heavy lift ships. Yer ive found that too, minimum is mate or master. Well I have a year to think about it.

Sorry, forgot to mention that stability on Heavylift vessels (whether conventional or semisubmersible) is completed mostly by the Chief Officer but sometimes by a Cargo Superintendant (generally the cargo super has a stability program to do the rough calculations). Heavy lift is a specialism in itself and covers many aspects from lifting to securing, and a lot of thinking outside of the box. Much of the time is spent in the cargo hold chasing around.
I personally loved working for biglift and would highly recommend heavy lift for good hands on work.
