Wondering if anyone knows what the job market is like for deck officers down under. I may at some point need to move down to New Zealand as the other half is from there and all her family are there. If we have kids mine would t be able to support much as they all work at sea.

Is it easy for UK seafarers to get steady work on ships down there? Is it only really passenger ferries in NZ? Is it feasible to live in NZ and work on Australian vessels?

I currently work a 3 on/off rotation so wouldn't really want to go back to 4+ month voyages especially when considering the move would be to improve family life.

At the point I would be looking to move I would already qualify for a visa to live and work over there due to the partner visa so I suppose I wouldnt need a job offer to move over.

Anecdotaly know of people in similar situations who've ended up working on the interislander ferries/offshore in Australia or on Harbour tugs etc. The fact you can get a spouse visa removes the biggest hurdle I reckon.

Of course you don't have to work locally. I work on cruise ships 3 on/off and we have a few deck officers from oz and new Zealand.

Aye I'd think cruises would have more opportunities but then the longer rotations so it's a trade off there.

Wondering as well if anyone would know what agencies cover NZ. For example, what would their version of seamariner/ Clyde recruitment be?

Wonder if the NZ version of DfT or MCA publishes a list of the approved recrutiers like the MCA do in the UK?
