  • Evenin' all.

    Hello,

Mike here, an aspiring 26 year old engineering cadet from Cheshire. Just starting out on the application process, so I'll be keen to get any words of wisdom on offer to help me on my journey. I'm hoping to start training in January if successful, so hopefully I'll be meeting some of you at college then all being well, in the meantime I luck forward to the craic on here.

    Cheers, Mike

    Hi Mike and welcome!

Any particular companies you're interested in? What's your background?

    Hope you enjoy the site!

      Hi Mike,

Only advice I would give is to get your applications in asap. I first started applying back in May 2009 for a January start - finally going to Glasgow this August! It's been a long wait...

Yes I work for the big blue canoe company.
No I do not report things from here to them as they are quite able to come and read this stuff for themselves.

            Re: Evenin' all.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys.

I had been anticipating that I'd have to wait longer before putting in my application, but noted with some surprise that Clyde Marine were accepting applications briefly, so I duly applied last week. I was then even more surprised to recieve a letter in the post on Saturday advising me that they're processing my application and will be in touch shortly regarding interview.

I'm also in the process of applying with Maersk and have applied to SSTG back on the 14th June, but as of yet haven't heard anything back from them yet, and given the length of time, don't anticipate I will sadly.

Maersk took a while to respond to me too (give them a break, they're dealing with 67 screaming cadets and sorting out all our needs and demands). If you want to chase up the application why not show a bit of dedication and initiative and make a phone call to check if they received it.

                Re: Evenin' all.

It's probably always worth applying at any time of year, as there'll always be one or two people changing their minds at any stage of the process with any organisation.

When I applied to SSTG for a place on the BSc at plymouth I didn't hear anything for ages, until I got a phone call saying they were just about to throw out my application because I hadn't replied to their email, but just wanted to check because I sounded so keen. Apparently they don't normally actually check and just assume the person is no longer interested.

In my case it had been because they had misspelled my email address in such a way that it was actually someone else's address and hence didn't bounce, so i'd suggest giving them a call before you give up hope. From what I hear, they're better than clyde...

                    Re: Evenin' all.

Definitely get in touch with SSTG again, even if just to check that your application's been received. Can't afford to not pursue the opportunities!

Weird one though with SSTG, as I did it online, so they'll have definitely recieved it. I suppose I could give them a call just to see if they'd considered it and arrived at a decision yet.

Yeah, there are a range of reported experiences with SSTG ranging from unflinching adulation to a dedicated facebook hate page. Seems like a bit of lottery with them (him) to me (based on what I've read so far).
