  • Hi!!

    Hi

I have just joined officercadet.com as I am hoping to train as a Systems Engineer with the RFA. got my AIB in May and frantically trying to make sure I am ready. If anyone wants advice re the Sift I am happy to discuss, however as I have not gone through the AIB I may not be the best person for this yet!

If all goes well and I pass I will be at BRNC in September and will start at South Tyneside in January 2015!!!! at 26 this has been a big decision for me to make. I am sure there are plenty of us in the same position too!

Good luck to all the other aspiring cadets!

Welcome to the forum, good luck with your application process. Have you considered applying to some of the commercial companies as an ETO cadet as a backup in case your not successful with the RFA?

      Hi

I have applied to some but have not heard anything back yet, although it was only about a month ago that the applications went in. I was pursuing a career in health care for quite a long time and then had a bit of an epiphany last year so have accepted that 2014 may not be the year where it all happens.

                Awesome!! see you there.

Are you pretty nervous too? I think I am most concerned about the general knowledge test and the essay.... really not sure how to prepare for the essay!

I am 26... bit of a career change going on... I am going to do some practice essays soon on relevant topics. I got told to remember to plan it out and to follow the plan. I just hate not knowing what to swot up on for it! Subscription to Navy News is not calming me down but should hopefully help me have a few opinions.

I saw that you already have a place with Maersk! congratulations at least the AIB will be more fun than anything else for you now. I have been told that its is quite fun once the main tests are out of the way.

I bought a couple of books on amazon today that look helpful too, one for the AIB preparation and another specifically for psychometric test practice. The reviews looked really good!

Ah okay, and yeah maersk have offered me a place! I'm still going to AIB though, just think it's best to keep my options open still! I'm a cadet so already have navy news haha! Only problem is, it's not all about the RFA!! And yeah, should b good fun!

Your options closed when you accepted an offer from Maersk (as stated on the other thread), you are wasting the RFA's time and public money by attending the AIB, and potentially denying another candidate the opportunity to attend. If you want to go just for the experience, apply for RNR.

I would have thought you would still have the option to pull out until you have signed your contract with whatever company you wish to take sponsorship with.

It's a topic we have covered quite a few times before, though I think rather inconclusively. Whilst it may be legal to walk away even after accepting an offer, but not yet having signed a contract or cadet agreement, it is at the very least rather poor form.

Though I will allow that there does seem to be a lot of pressure to accept an offer quickly to be assured of a place, even if not with your first choice of sponsor, and I can see the temptation in accepting an offer but hoping for a better one. But Humperdinck seems quite settled on Maersk from his posts in the other topic.

I was told I had to make a decision with regards to maersk by last Friday, I'd already had a 2 week extension so I could attend my RFA interview... When I accepted them, I was up front and honest that I still had an AIB to attend. Maersk were actually pleased that I was honest with them and appreciated that, they also said that they respect that I want to go to the AIB. The RFA was my first choice at the end of the day. Maersk made it clear that there is no legal binding and I still have a cooling off period where I can pull out. I haven't even had any paperwork through yet from maersk so it shouldn't be a problem. Although I probably won't do the dirty on maersk at the last minute because that's not right and they've put the time and effort into me so it's only right that I show some commitment.
