Alright everyone. I am Pete from Birmingham, had originally intended on joining the Royal Navy but failed the medical as a result of minor hyperextension in the elbows. Couldn't really think of a new career path until told about the Merchant Navy around September this year. Quickly concluded it was a career I wanted and started researching. Sent off my application to SSTG early November and by the 20th I was in Rochester having an interview. They got me sorted with Evergreen Marine and now (providing I pass the ENG1 medical) I will be gong to Warsash late Jan. Everything has gone 10 times quicker than I expected, left my dull job at co-op yesterday and now working my way through mountains of forms. Main concerns at the minute are how to keep up with football while away, and looking like a div in that all that fancy uniform and hat. Apart from that excited and keen to get going.

Don't worry, most ships have inter webs these days so you will be able to keep up with the Villa!
Good luck with the medical, hope you find the site useful and that you hang around and share some of your own experiences as you go through the system.Go out, do stuff

As chiefy said, most cargo ships tend not to bother with a uniform now a days, At sea I used to wear a bright orange t-shirt with the company logo on it, and a paid of jogging bottoms, and even the companies that do go for the uniforms hardly ever where a hat, unless of course your on a cruise ship, which I don't think ever green maine do. Some ships have satellites on board for the watching of football and TV. On my last ship meal at the weekend were planned around half time of the football

Sorry Pete, if this career is for you, hopefully you'll have some great experiences, but there's plenty crazy stuff too!

Yea, I had the tug refuse to slacken it's lines and let us go until we gave them cigarettes....... And then in a shock move I offered some officials cigs and they refused, saying they wanted coffee pens and cake, to which the old man hit the roof and told them to piss off....... they take the malboro or nothing!
