need info about Australia

im siva n new in this site. im in the process of permanently shifting to australia from india. rite now im giving my ch.mates exam in india n had worked only on tankers. can anyone help me with informations about job opportunities and certificates requirements in australia. thanks in advance.......

Not sure what moving from India to Australia is like but I know that from the UK it is an extremely difficult process. I'm looking into doing this as well.

Be prepared to retake your chief mates again in Australia as soon as you've passed them in India...

I've just completed this process and received our permanent residency visas this weekend. You will need 12 months sea time after passing your ticket and will have to get all of that validated by AMSA before eventually going over and sitting an oral exam for the relevant license. Not an easy process by any means, and that's coming for, the UK with a similar style of maritime regulation and training. You will also need to pass an IELTS English exam at a minimum of level 6 I believe.
Be prepared for the hard work, all of the information you need is on the AMSA website. You will need to become very familiar with that website.

Just to add to the good advice above I would just say from my observations here in Oz that as a foreigner with less than a Masters level certificate the job market will be very hard on you, before you commit make sure you are fully aware or have a job lined up. I hate to say this (and please I am not singling you out because you are from India but a lot of guys from India struggle to get work).

Also as you will find out it is much harder sorting your certificates out if you wish to proceed up to Masters level as you end up doing another set of orals, hence I would always recommend moving over once you have your masters or CE ticket no matter where your from.

Good luck and I'm sorry my visa knowledge is slightly out of date as I did it a while ago and didn't come over on a skilled visa.

thanks to all for your advice. at present im more confused whether to proceed or not. looking for your valuable suggestions.
im from india and all my certificates n studies as well. after completing my B.Sc..,(nautical science), i worked as a cadet on-board for a year. then after getting my 2nd mate coc, i completed my 18 months seatime as 3rd and 2nd officer. since beginning of my career i had worked only on oil tankers. now im giving my chief mates exam. i suppose it will take minimum 5 more months to complete my exams. due to my exams n family situation i have sailed only 4 months in past 3 yrs. this is my situation. please give ur honest opinion for the questions below:
1. is there really a chance to get a job in australia after completing all the formalities as per australian rules.
2. what is the approx. salary in aud for second officer.
3. by chance if i dont get a job there, is there some other alternative jobs.
4. can i appear there for chief mates orals there directly after completing here or do i need anymore seatime.
5. as it will take 5 months for me to get my chiefmates coc from india, can i attend orals for 2nd mate coc in australia first n sail with that as second officer and later apply for chiefmate orals in australia with my chief mate license from india inorder to save my time.( i understand i have to do orals twice)
6. from the amsa website what i understood is first i have to send all my certificate copies, once im eligible then i have to go to australia in a tourist visa to attend an oral exam and if i pass then i will be issued with certificate of recognition(COR). they have mentioned cor will be issued only if u have a proof for immigrating to australia. as visa and immigration process are expensive, at which stage should i apply for it.
7. what about other certificates, can i re-validate them there if it expires as all my certificates are from india.
8. right now i have time, age and dont have much responsibilities as im single. is there more chances to succeed. will it be worth taking a risk to go through all this.

Hi in my opinion:

1. It's possible but will be very difficult unless you have unlimited DP ticket. At present there is only 1 vacancy for 2nd Officer I wouldn't bank on getting a job here without a long wait.
2. 150000 per year (you pay tax)
3. Alternative will be surveyor (you may struggle without Masters ticket) etc websites such as seek.com.au will give you an idea
4. You need to speak to AMSA (see website)
5. You will end up doing a lot of orals and travelling (chief mate home, then AMSA chief mate, then masters home AMSA masters etc
6. Someone like Young mariner would be better at answering this question
7. This depends on whether AMSA will accept your tickets (ask them) but this is a big issue (I have to go back to the UK for some reveals and then some I can do locally)
8. Only you can answer this, just bear in mind that there are very few jobs here for mariners due to the limited amount of Australian ships and due to having to pay tax you financially can't afford to not work on an Australian ship.

You will need 12 months seatime after your Indian OOW license to apply for an OOW CoR, you will need 12 months seatime after your Indian Chief Mates license to get your Australian Chief Mate CoR. After you have applied, had your certificates accepted and completed the oral, only then can you apply to immigration for a visa.
Reading your posts, I think that passing the IELTS English exam should be a focus first, because this may be your first hurdle.

Of course there are always other countries to move to that might be slightly easier, the UK for example. To be honest I have no idea whether it would be easier to come here than Australia but I know there are a lot of Indian seafarers in the UK so maybe it is...
