I went for deck because my teacher said I would never get a job looking out the window...

My choice was validated after my week in the ER cleaning out boiler tubes on a steam ship ... Took weeks to get clean again!

Doubt anyone is going to make you learn another language. English is the official language of the sea so we are at a distinct advantage when it comes to that. The only time you might need to would be if you ended up working for a company where the rest of the crew were from another country but even then they would still all have to be able to speak English anyway (to how good a level is a different matter). I wouldn't worry about this as a cadet.

I don't really see where you are getting that from - unless the positions have changed - of the 3 positions listed there at the moment, only the second engineer one states "Must speak english fluently" purely because you may have to traverse with guests and not being fluent in english doesn't look good. At no point does it state you need to speak anything other than english. Official language on RCL ships is English.

Unless there was a position for RCCL's Pullmantur or TUI Cruises brands also displayed there - in which case they require you to speak Spanish and German respectively.

However, there are obviously some companies / vessels where the official language is NOT english, although if the vessel trades internationally the officers as a minimum will be able to speak varying degrees of english. Note, I state "official" language - as in the company have decided that the common language onboard will not be english, as opposed to everyone onboard just speaking their home language which often happens.

"Ability to speak English clearly, distinctly and cordially with guests." That's all I can find relating to languages. Doesn't seem to say anything about any other languages

It says "Ability to speak additional languages such as Spanish, French or German preferred."

The key word there is "preferred". It is not a qualification necessary to do the job, just something that would be viewed advantageously from their point of view. What weight they would put on it over various other factors when assessing you for the job I'm not sure. As Alistair said some of their other brands use different languages on board so maybe if you could speak one of these languages then they could transfer you between the brands and that's the only reason they are interested in it. Don't think it would be a deal breaker.

Seriously don't worry about it. If you can speak English you will be fine. And concentrate getting a cadetship before you start worrying about the different requirements different companies have for newly qualified officers.
