  • Salaam!

    Hi all,

My name is Iain, I'm from Edinburgh and I am an aspiring deck cadet. Just had my interview this afternoon with CMT. Went not too badly I reckon. Seems like I got my foot in the door early for the January intake, so let's hope I was successful.

It would have gone much worse had it not been for this amazing site. I haven't created a profile till tonight but I have been trawling these forums endlessly for the past couple of weeks. Thanks to all of you who post so much useful information!

    Rock on

Welcome to the industry You wont regret it It'll be a nightmare if you find out soon you've got the job...... I found out in Feb and then had to go back to my boring office job for 7 months knowing that I already had a new job

          Hello and welcome!

Just out of curiosity, where did you learn Salaam from!?
I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.....

All posts here represent my own opinion and not that of my employer.

              Hi Guinness

I grew up in Abu Dhabi. I only know basic Arabic, it's a sin. Too easy to get by over there with just English. Seriously thinking about learning Arabic fluently, then just cruise around in some rich Sheik's superyacht for the rest of my life :P

People have had much worse ideas than that pal!

Best of luck in getting a place with CMT.

Last year we had 3 guys from Kuwait and 2 from Oman in my class, lots of arabic was spoken. This year we have only 2 Kuwaiti guys and two Angolan guys who speak no Arabic... so i'm unsure why I even mentioned them, but all good

Ahh cool Sadly my Arabic isn't of a high enough standard to have a meaningful conversation. However, when it come to directing taxi drivers and/or insulting their mothers, I am accomplished! :P

It's amazing how both of those things can be required on the same night :P

Knowledge of Arabic would sadly preclude you from almost all but one superyacht jobs with Middle Eastern Royalty, I saw a stewardess fired when it was discovered her father was from Lebanon onboard a ME Head of State owned yacht.
The one that I do know where Arabic would help a great deal, is where I work...
