A family friend has expressed an interest in an Engineering cadetship and I came across this very interesting site whilst browsing for information.
I felt the need to join so as to point out a number of mis-apprehensions a rock crusher seems to be labouring under. Namely a couple of P&O steam ships...unfortunately I didn't realise the thread was locked!
However..what was so wrong with the Canberra?...granted her kettles had seen better days, always the weak point in a steam plant, however the turbines, alternators, Main Motors et al were as good when she went up the beach at Gadani as they were when Harland & Wolff delivered her 37 years earlier.
Also the story about stopping traffic on the Sydney harbour bridge is not aprocryphal. The ship concerned was the Arcadia. The original, proper one, not the current, noisy smelly diesely thing. The company didn't instal a new boiler control system at great expense...it was her last Sydney departure on her scrapping run! Images are to be found on the internet of the incident.
Hatchorder I think he's talking about you...

Also, any links of said incident? Google is just so damn hard these days... I'm also drunk, I mean tispy, no sober, honest officer...
