  • Hello, help please?

    Hello all,

I'm Jonathan, 23, starting as an engine cadet at South Shields next month.

I'm struggling to find a website to buy my black blazer with the classic square pocket, if anyone could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated?

    cheers!

Google "Baun & Co" and "S&M Bass"

    Good luck.

EDIT: Actually, just out of interest, do your sponsoring company not supply your uniform?

That is ridiculous, is it not standard for companies to supply uniform for college any more?

If there is anyone from any of the training providers / companies lurking the forums and reading this, if you expect cadets to pay for their own uniforms then you should hang your heads in shame.

I don't think many do - mine only supplied a tie and branded jumper and waterproof jacket... and that was 8 years ago (I'm getting old).

Do a lot of them not make cadets buy their own uniform but then reimburse them? Mine was paid for but I ended up having to buy my own stuff anyway because the stuff they sent me was ridiculously large. I looked absurd. But given some of the cuts in wages and stuff that have been made recently then I wouldn't be massively surprised if cadets were having to buy their own uniforms.

On a side note, I wouldn't bother buying a blazer. Unless you really want to wear one. No-one wears them after the first few weeks anyway (I actually never wore mine once). That wasn't at Shields like but I would be surprised if it was any different there. And most of the engineers seemed to spend 90% of the time wearing boiler suits anyway so would probably have even less use for it than the deck department.

Do we need the blazer? I was under the impression the pull over would suffice.

Back when I started (25 years ago Sept 6th) we had to buy our own all we got supplied was tie and badge.

I know times have changed but why would you expect a company to pay for uniform? This is a genuine question and not trying to start an argument etc

Yes I work for the big blue canoe company.
No I do not report things from here to them as they are quite able to come and read this stuff for themselves.

I have to agree Chief, I would have been happy to pay for all my uniform, my sponsoring company have provided the pull over, a jacket and then the standard PPE. I wouldn't agree on having to pay for uniform that had a company logo on.

My company told us to buy our own kit, and even supplied us with a kit list and a recommendation of a supplier we should use. It was only after I had bought it that I realised that the fixed uniform allowance we received after didn't cover the cost of all the kit list from the recommended outfitter!

That was an early lesson to me not to trust what they told me to do.

Ironically got a full set up- jumper, shirts, boots and so on for my first sea phase... took up half my luggage and most of it got dumped immediately as no one wore uniform onboard- jeans and flip flops!

I didn't go to South Shields but went to Warsash.

I wouldn't bother with a blazer, my room mate had one and nether wore it, she just got a cheap one from a supermarket in the back to school range.

                        Hope this helps

Because they insist that cadets wear it. Considering the fact that they are on a pretty poor salary to start with and considering the fact that the companies get pretty generous tax breaks from the government for employing them then a couple of hundred quid for a bit of uniform isn't going to dint their profits too much. Expecting cadets to fork out that sort of money before they even start id a bit much.

Hey I go to shields and I never wore my blazer ever In phase 1 most people wear shirt tie and torusers, by phase 5 people are wearing chinos, trainers and a white shirt.... standards slip (although I always wear shirt and tie, dress shoes etc)

As for paying.... Maersk issued me with 5 White shirts, 2 pairs of trousers, Blazer, tie, wooly pully, waterproof jacket, White tropical shorts (never been worn) and a hold all which fits into most airlines hand luggage requirements, although from what I hear, we are the lucky few as most other guys had to buy their own stuff and only got a tie. PPE/Boiler suits also issued(and topped up on board as reqd) and we can renew out PPE every year and uniforms every 2 years
