  • Hey guys and gals, ETO cadet at STC

    Hey peeps,

I received confirmation of my ETO cadetship from Clyde Marine today and my sponsorship company and I'm over the moon. I will be learning the tricks of the trade at STC and I'm just checking if anyone else here will be doing there ETO cadetship at STC come September? Also any details of the start date, if it is in fact September?

    Cheers

I'm starting at STC on the Fd Eng course but my start date is Monday the 2nd Sept. I would have thought yours would be the same. I've had my joining instructions a good few weeks now so I guess you will have them very soon.

Thanks Bulman. Do you have any advice or tips you could give me for phase 1?

Ratchet_Spanner, I'm sure we'll see each other come September then.

Not much to say really, it may be a bit un-organised at first, and you are staying in halls which has its ups and downs but just enjoy it, it flys by! Make sure you head into shields a few times too haha. Obviously try and keep on top of what you learn sometimes we only got told a week in advance that we had a test on it! But the pass mark is only like 40% so not to bad (may change).

As I've said in a different thread check out the book "practical marine electrical knowledge" edition one and two are in the library, as it really helps if you struggle to understand the lecturers in certain lessons. It pretty much covers every complicated thing we learnt.

Steeleman have you joined the STC Sept 13 starters group on bookface yet? Like you say though no doubt we shall cross paths in a couple of weeks.

Bulman - Thanks for the info, appreciate it. Just one more question do you have to stay in halls for phase 1? Since I haven't received the joining instructions yet coming from Scotland I was hoping to rent out a place close by to the college.

Ratchet_Spanner - No I havent joined it yet I was trying to find it, could you send me a link to it? Cheers.

It depends on your company, most will demand that you stay in halls. Our company wanted us to stay in the halls for the whole of phase one, probably had an agreement with the college, where as some people were able to move out after Christmas, as you do a three/four month contract with the halls.

Clyde Marine didn't care that I didn't stay in Halls during my phase 1. I think that the other Clyde Marine guys found it difficult once they had moved in to the Halls to move out though. No one really told me to stay in halls and it wasn't mentioned in my contract. The one thing I would say about avoiding the Halls is you might miss out on banter or nights out.
If you go with private accommodation I would seriously avoid Moody and Co at all costs. They are a huge nightmare! I had a leak in my flat and they did nothing for the 6 months I lived there even when I was phoning daily. Useless.
As Bulman says, use the library for books, and the PMEK is decent and you can get it cheap on ebay sometimes. Mine was about 15 pounds if I remember right. It covers the basic knowledge for ships and is a basic bible although it is slightly dated for some of the modern ships out there. The library has a decent collection so you can see what is there and what you like, different books for different people.

I thought you did have a little bit of hassle of Clyde about the fact you didnt go in halls, even though they only gave you a few days?

I had an issue with the halls, they told me they were full when they were not. The halls of residence woman I talked to said that they had no free rooms so I said I will sort myself out. That is why I ended up staying in private, Clyde Marine didn't even know until my first meeting with them and they didn't mention anything. Although after my medical I told Clyde Marine I didn't want to stay in halls and my training officer was fine with it.
