  • Hello!

    Hello,

I'm a Merchant Navy deck cadet studying a BSc Hons at Plymouth University. Currently finishing my 2nd year of study and then undertaking a year out at sea to complete my seatime before i return to uni for my final year of the degree. I'm sponsored by SSTG and have 1 months seatime that i got during the summer break between years 1 and 2.

If anyone has any questions feel free to ask...

I'm looking for seatime from July if anyone knows of any companies that want cadets...

    Cheers,

    George

Hey George, thanks for Joining. I'm sure you'll be able to help provide valuable information about the Bsc course.

        Re: Hello!

        Hi George! Welcome

I'm applying to Plymouth next year for the BSc hopefully, how are you finding the course?
Also, are you being sponsered by CMA CGM?

Theres a little rumor going around that Plymouth will not be running the BSc course next year. Please tell me this isn't true

Hopefully will see you at the open day on the 23rd. I'll be there

          Re: Hello!

Hey Schancky! I'm on the course with Georgie Porgie.

I'm loving the course, the first two years have been really good overall. Me and George are sponsored by SSTG as are most of the guys in our year. There are 2 CMA CGM cadets in 2nd year and I think only 1 in the first year.

We've been told that it's very likely the Bsc will stopping running and the current course will have a major change in the way it is assessed although nothing has been confirmed yet.

We won't be around for the open day I'm afraid, we both have our General operators certificate assessment that day! I'm sure there will be some of us around to look after you and the lecturers will go out their way to make the day worth while! What made you choose Plymouth then?

            Re: Hello!

Well I want to do a degree, and as Plymouth does a degree specific to the job I want to do, I thouhgt it would be the best place to go! I e-mailed the Universiy's Faculty of Science and Technology on Monday saying:

"I am interested in your BSc (Hons) Marine Studies (Merchant Shipping) course that I hope to apply to for the 2011 intake, but I have heard from a few people that the course may not be running next year. I was just wondering if you could clear up for me if the course will be running in 2011?"

I got a reply on Wednesday to say:

            "Hi Matthew

We have not heard of any plans to discontinue this course for 2011"

So hopefully I will be starting next year!

              Re: Hello!

Nice one, that's the exact reason I ended up at Plymouth and it's working out pretty well so far!

Well if I hear anymore on the matter I shall get in touch! Hopefully they will carry it on, it'll be a shame to see it stop. I think the only reason is that companies can be reluctant to sponsor Bsc cadets because it works out more expensive for them.

Let me know if you need any questions answered about Plymouth, Uni or the course!

What other companies other than CMA CGM and Maersk send cadets to Plymouth?

I think Carnival do, but I'm not 100% sure.

I'm not sure what other companies do to be honest. Everyone at Plymouth at the moment is CMA CGM, Maersk or MEF.

Maritime Education Foundation. That's technically who your sponsor is if you train with SSTG under none of SSTG's particular member companies.

                            Re: Hello!

Hi Schnanky...cheers adam for giving the info! It's been a while since i've been on here.

Good to hear that your thinking of coming to Plymouth! As Mr Smith said, it is an awesome course, the first two years have been great and all the lecturers are really good too. I'm not sure if the course will be going in 2011 or not but i haven't heard anything...if i do i will let you know tho'. You might have heard that they're starting a foundation degree in sept 2010 which is more appealing to sponsoring companies....that's the only reason why some companies don't like sponsoring on this course ( because it's expensive over the four years).

Plymouth is an awesome city! When you start you may find that the first year will have a lot of modules that may appear to be irrelevant. Some of the modules can be boring (if you get bad lecturers from other marine science degrees). We've had loads of people complaining but hey, it's a degree. Just put up with the bad bits cause every degree is going to have some aspects which are not enjoyable...

                            Anyway hope this helps.
