  • Hi everyone, need help!

    Hi everyone

I'm a 2nd year student at Plymouth University studying BSc (Hons) Navigation and Maritime Science which is an MNTB/MCA accredited programme for Merchant Navy Deck Officer entry. Unlike other UK cadets, until last year I have been unable to apply for sponsorship through the normal channels as I have only gained British citizenship in 2012. So far, I have funded all my own studies (including STCW 95, ENG1 medical). I have worked very hard towards this goal and obtained all the qualifications needed for entry into the necessary academic courses.

Now I am looking for a ship operator who will enable me to get the seatime that I need to obtain my OOW Certificate of Competency. I have emailed many sponsor companies including CMT for having sea phase but been unable to get any chance. After that I tried applying for cadetship but it was either unsuccessful or no reply at all. My situation is bit complicated and I'm afraid that I won't be able to do my MCA orals but I am still determined to make my career at sea. I desperately need a good suggestion on how and where to get required sea time.

Could anyone please help me out or give me any suggestion on what I should do next!

    Thanks

Yes I work for the big blue canoe company.
No I do not report things from here to them as they are quite able to come and read this stuff for themselves.

      Hello Chiefy
      thanks for the reply
I did email chiltern maritime to:[email protected], didn't receive any reply but I haven't contacted Trinity House. Do you have any contact or email add for them? Also I did try SSTG but they said they no longer take BSc students

Who are you? (I'm one of the second year FDSD students at Plymouth - not on my sea phase yet!)

Have you spoken to any of the marine staff (in particular, the one who keeps talking about the QM2!) about this?

He has good connections with all of the sponsoring companies does he not?

          Hi Lewisscott22
My name is Sulochana Rai. I don't know much FDSD student and yah I did spoke to staffs there. They did recommend few companies including SSTG but trust me its so disappointing when it comes to my type of situation .
My third year starts this September but I'm really hoping to do my sea phase first.

I was going to say, I don't think there is much you can do.

I would still call up Trinity and see if they can suggest anything. If not, go back to the Plymouth staff, update them and ask for their recommendations.

Oh and the contact page for Trinity: http://www.trinityhousetraining.org/contact/

                Hi Srai

I would work my way down the following list : http://www.careersatsea.org/apply/sp..._companies.php

And depending how much you want it you could say I'm willing to not be paid for my first phase so that you can assess my ability etc etc

                Good luck!

                  Hi guys,
Just wanted to update about my sea time hunt...
I have been invited for an informal interview with RCCL next week. I wasn't sure for what purpose until I called them in and they said its just an interview (informal one). I am pretty excited and nervous as well.

i don't think they will offer me my required sea time straight away but I want to be well prepared and make good impression even though its informal interview. I read through forums on this website which has been very helpful for the interview preparation but have u guys have any particular suggestion with RCCL interview??

                  thanks

Have you spoken to Clyde Marine? They used to take BSc students in 2nd or 3rd year as I recall...

                        Hi GuinnessMan

I did speak to them and also called them 2 weeks ago but they said they are trying to find a place for me and it may take some time. Nothing for sure at the moment, just waiting for their reply and I'm afraid they may never reply fingers crossed

yah and any suggestion for RCCL interview?? What questions would be appropriate to ask them or is it even ok to ask any questions?

                        thanks
