  • Applying for US C1-D Transit Visa

It probably varies from company to company, but when do Phase 1 cadets normally have to apply for the US C1-D Transit Visa - or specifically when do Bibby Cadets normally have to apply.

Your sponsoring company should sort that out for you if it is required. If not, I would not think you are heading there.

Give them a call if in doubt.

It will take anywhere from 3-6 weeks to get an appointment at the US Embassy London, so if you do need a C1-D you will probably go about a month before the end of your initial phase When you next have a meeting with your training officer you could raise the issue then, or if your already in the timeframe of T minus 1 month to Phase 2, then you could easily send a polite enquiry e-mail to your training officer.

Do companies not want you to get a US visa now as a matter of course, even if you are not going there - but may arrive there at some point?

It depends upon your company and where the vessel trades. If the vessel is never going to the states, then why bother?
I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.....

The company is Bibby and the sponsorship is subject to obtaining a C1-D Visa. My question is, when will Bibby most likely give instructions to apply for the visa IE brfore starting Phase 1 or nearer the the seagoing Phase 2 when an actual ship and joining details are known?

Maersk say the same about the sponsorship being subject to obtaining a visa. They have instructions on how to do it in their joining pack. Check to see if it's in there, if not give them a ring or send an email to ask

Well if the sponsorship is subject to obtaining the visa, then I'm guessing you need the visa prior to Phase 1.

Is it for you or someone else?

Many cadetships process the visa during Phase 1, if they have a large group of cadets then they will send them all together in a single batch. I wouldn't worry, the training officer will meet with the cadets early on in Phase 1 and advise them.
