Welcome Warren! I don't think any engineer would ever describe their job as romantic, but I for one totally get the "being at sea fills a void ashore" thing. Out of interest, how does your partner feel about you doing this? There are many many seafarers with families at home, but as people used to start cadetships younger than a lot of folk now, they generally will have met their partner and started a family when already working at sea, and therefore know what they're signing up for at the start. I'm not trying to discourage you from this at all, but when you say you want to spend as much time at sea as possible it rings alarm bells for someone with a young family, it's important to have a balance

Whether you do the HND or FD route as an Engineer cadet you will do the exact same amount of time at sea so it is neither here nor there which one you do. Did you not ask about fast-track?
Again, I just need to point this out, but life at sea as a passie on a cruise ship is a whole hell of a lot different than life at sea on a working cargo ship so it may not be as "romantic" as you think and with a young child this could be very difficult for you.
Good luck with the interviews but please do take a few more minutes to think about it.

Hello best introduce myself, names warren i am 22 years of age engaged and father of 17month old lily shes the best, i am due to complete a Beng (honours) degree June this year in automotive engineering the thought of what to do next has been dwelling for years. a friend works in the merchant navy completed his cadetship and met a friend along the way who's father was md of a rig transportation company regardless he has now landed a very well paid job. working away from home has always been one of my life ambitions (before anyone mentions the family i think this should give me more incentive and motivations to take this course)
since being a young boy i have always spend family holidays aboard cruise ships and loved every minute of it there just something about being at sea that fills a void ashore, anyway less of the blabbering currently im in the application/interview stage with my first interview being 4th of feb with sstg (don't know why the bad rep heard nothing but gold myself)
the route im taking is the hnd cadetship i could of done the fd route due to my quals but i have decided against it as i want to absorb as much as i can and spend as much time at sea gaining exp as i canTags: None
