I thought I would say hello after having a good lurk around. It is a great forum. My compliments to all those who take part!
I have recently applied for a few deck officer cadetships with different organisations. I am a career-changer rather than just starting out and, I know it shouldn't given the anti-agism legislation, but I think my maturity is counting against me in the application process.
I chose my A-levels, double maths and physics, originally for entry as a trainee for a different type of deck - flight - but got sucked into computer science as student, researcher then lecturer. Along the way I developed an interest in sailing, yachting and the sea and after 10,000 miles on little boats as deck hand I eventually self-studied for Yachtmaster theory and passed this and the practical exam at the Solent School of Yachting, Warsash. I since captained a few yachts over around 4,000 miles in total - this is quite a lot when they travel around walking pace :-) Anyway, it was time for a change and after a few ocean voyages on cruise ships, it struck me that deck officer was the perfect career change for me.
With 340 UCAS points, two degrees in computer science, sea experience, qualifications, enthusiasm and all the experience, sound judgement and sense that life brings, I thought the likes of Viking Recruitment may have been sufficiently interested to call me in for assessment before sending a standard rejection email. I have heard nothing as yet from the others I applied to - most of which just say if you don't hear in 28 days assume we're not interested.
The days are ticking away. Wish me luck! I'll post back with any news.
Tim.
