  • Hey there!

    Hi guys!
I'm 23 and I'm looking to join the merchant navy. I've been thinking about it for the past year and have decided I have to go for it! I'm planning to apply to Princess and Carnival as I really want to be an officer on a ferry or cruise ship. Yes, I know the money is in the oil tankers but I'd be lying if I didn't say I'd be unhappy with my choice in the long run. I'll take the pay cut.
I've read through some of the forums already and they've been very helpful. Thanks and I hope to keep learning more!

Hi Imcm, I'm sure one of the staff will be along with a "proper " welcome soon, but in the mean time, welcome to the forums.

There are more and more cadets joining at a slightly older age these days and a good thing it is too.

If you want to work on ferries then try Clyde Marine as well as Princess and Carnival.
    Go out, do stuff

      Hello, and welcome.

Don't limit yourself by only applying to Princess and Carnival, apply to every company out there. Its easier to to move from freight to passenger, and there are more freight companies offering cadetships than cruise companies. I know you have your heart set on ferries and cruisers, but its better to be at sea on a coaster with the oppurtunity to get a job in the cruise industry than sat on dry land having only applied to 2 companies and been turned down.

        Hello and Welcome...
I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.....

          Hi Clanky,
I was planning to apply to Clyde Marine but I've been getting very mixed reviews from people I've spoken to which has made me a little wary. Would you recommend them though?

You mean one of the mods will be along with the bar bill for last night, don't you?

In the meantime, before you get the bill, welcome to the forums Imcm25!

                Someone mention drinkies??

Hey Imcm25! I'm one of those fabled mod types, and as I'm on leave at the mo I guess the welcoming is down to me... quite what a "proper" welcome involves I'm not sure... do we throw things at him or buy him drinks and slip the king's shilling in to his glass?

Anyway m'dear you are very welcome, please do, if you have time, have a good browse of old threads and make use of the search function to find many opinions that have already been stated (ad-infinitum) on various subjects. And of course, don't be afraid to ask questions, there are no silly questions, only silly answers (not that we'd ever be silly......no not us) You may find yourself directed to a thread by some kind person or other, where the question you have raised has been raised, probed, flogged and put to bed by general consensus, (Gods forbid we ever have to go through the great mini-fridge debate of 2010 again!) but please don't take offense, it's just that in cases like that, there's nothing more that can be said on that subject!

Anyway, enough burbling from me... where's the wine?
