for an application question you might say you prefer the sound of being responsible for safe navigation and stability of the ship more than being responsible for the engineering side of things.

To restart the great deck-engineering debate, I think of boring form filling, chartwork and checklists when I think of deck officers.

I have a genuine love for this side of the job. Getting a ship ready for an MCA Survey can be a lot of fun, that's just my opinion anyway... secretly I love the bureaucratic side of this job.

I suppose I'm a bit of a fun Nazi, permit to works and risk assessments for everytttthinggg.

It's the other way round where I work. The pilot sits in a corner and drinks tea while we take the ship in and the engineers get the manufacturer in to fix everything. Isn't it a topsy turvy world!

I think the Master would have died of a heart-attack if they asked (remember it's the radio room computer, i.e. the one for email...)

That's what I've heard. Has anyone told the RFA engineer cadets that?

One of my captains made me as a cadet help with all his paper work as computers/anything electronic confused him and made him angry

I do this job because I love it, I've done a wide variety of land-based jobs, and this, while in some respects can be repetitive, stressful, lonely, etc.. I still love the fact that I go to work every day and get to stare out of the windows at an everchanging seascape, I get to hang out with a brilliant crew when I'm off, I am challenged daily and learn something new every day too.
