  • Hullo.

I'm Chris, and I've lurked the forum for too long now.

I've accepted an offer with North Star Shipping at Glasgow for the 23rd, and seeing as I know too well that shyness does nothing for sea time, I thought I'd say hello and start spinning some dits.

This is my second career pursuit since sobering up after two years of an English Literature degree, and realising that the career and health prospects of continuing to live as an arts student weren't in my long term interests. During my time at university I joined the URNU (Universities Royal Naval Unit) and found myself settling comfortably (if 'settled' or 'comfortable' could ever truly apply) into the idea of a life at sea.

So after a trip to Kent, an SSTG interview and a long wait, I'm making my preperations to move into St. Lukes halls and crack on with the course. Having read over many of the officer cadet blogs online I've been inspired to write my own, as it seems information on Glasgow as a college is a bit few and far between. (What I have read isn't the most positive, so it may well make a delightfully scathing read).

    Looking forward to contributing,

    Chris.

      Hi Chris and welcome

I've not heard much about Glasgow either so I look forward to reading your blog! Just be careful if you're going to slate it, I'd try and stay anonymous, though from personal experience I know that's easier said than done!!

I'll be doing the Professional Diploma course in spite of having to hire a maths tutor who'll slap me when I count with my fingers. I'll no doubt see you around, and if you're new to the Glasgow area and would like to know what you've let yourself in for then, as a born and braised local, just let me know.

Thanks, size4riggerboots! Let me take this opportunity to suck up and say your blog was a very informative, entertaining read and, being above plagiarism, I'd be hard pressed to match it.

The URNU gave me good experience in being tactful when it comes to superiors, so if I lose the plot entirely they'll have to be doing something very wrong. But now I'm being pessimistic.

I still add up on my fingers!! I try and do it subtly, like I'm slowly drumming my fingers on the table or my leg, but it's still blatent!!

Hi Chris, although I'm not at Glasgow it’s nice to see a fellow SSTG Jan starter. I hope you didn't make the same mistake as me and end up staying at the King's Head Hotel the night before your interview?

I can't say I did, although I seem to recall walking past it in an attempt to kill some time. It looked pleasant enough from the outside, but you didn't rate it too highly then?

I did have celebratory lunch in a local Thai restaurant, where the waiter's only confused reply to my very chuffed proclamation that I had a earned a cadetship was to tell me to order using numbers.

URNU eh? You on your 2nd or 3rd liver transplant?
