    Elo,

    I'm attempting to become an ETO, so thought I'd try and make contact with those that know what its really like!

    I've applied to everyone I can possibly think of so far, but haven't had a massive response yet. *Fingers crossed*

    Anywho, I'd only ever considered going to Warsash, but apparently that isn't the best place for ETOs, so Tyneside becomes my only option... I've never considered going North! I'm a southerner and have only ventred the other side of the M4 for more than a day trip, once!

    Soo, yeah, does that count as an introduction? I'm terrible at forums!

    Hiya and welcome!

    I thought it worth mentioning (in case people search the subject...)
    The ETO course at Warsash is not the same as the ETO course at South Shields, so you're comparing apples with oranges there.
    The ETO course at WMA is the same as the traditional (mechanical) engineers' course, but with a couple of bolt on electrical subjects to satisfy AMERC (http://www.amerc.ac.uk/). You end up with a traditional engineers' CoC.
    The ETO course at SS, is an Electrical and Electronic Engineering course, with none of the mechanical content.
    There is currently no CoC at the end of this course, but this year's IMO conference at Manila has started the ball rolling for an "EE" CoC to sit alongside the "ME" CoC (allegedly).

      Hey and thanks

      Do you know much about which is more use in the future? As far as I can work out (from reading websites etc) the STC course is great for the more specialised "technical" cadetships, but is that same piece of paper transferable if I wanted it to be, afterwards. E.g. could I go cruise with it?
      I think that makes sense, in a kinda wonky English way.

      I think I shall have to ask at the open days and things... Talk to companies as well as lecturers.

      In the meantime, I shall have a search about here a little more!

                I drive - its about 370 miles. My company give me the rail fare equivalent which was around ?90 return with a railcard when I went home for Christmas. My petrol cost was just over that.

                If I was a younger cadet I'd probably have taken the train, but I'm used to having a car now - Its nice driving to the supermarket, the beach or the metro centre while your up here too.

                  Ouch, ?90 for petrol?

                  I was looking at ways to get to/from the open day in a couple of weeks, I'm determined to manage it in a day without starting the journey the day before. Although the flights I was looking at have now been removed from the EasyJet site...

                    yeah, the petrol price keeps going up - If only the pound could go abck to its old 1.50 euro the pound rate, petrol would suddenly be about 20% cheaper...

                    I could try to improve my mpg by driving nearer the optimum speed I guess.
