  • Aspiring deck cadet

    Hi everyone!

My name is Rhys Klein and i'm currently in year ten in Sydney, Australia.
I only know a little on becoming a deck cadet and was wondering if anyone could shed some light on the subject.
I want to do the most I can now to ensure I get the best possible opportunities as a deck cadet.
Also, what is better, commercial or cruise companies?

Any info and experiences would be great.
    Cheers, Rhys

With reference to which is better (commercial or recreation), it really depends on personal preference. Personally, I love the idea of working aboard cruise ships but I have friends who cannot imagine ever working on passenger vessels.

Neither are better, each part of the industry has their own positives and negatives.

What else would you like to know?
I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.....

Work hard and pay attention! Getting to the top jobs is never going to be a case of anything but working your way up there. I don't know how the Aussie education system works, but you want to be aiming to study Maths, Physics and another science based subject at the highest level you can in school (your equivalent of our A-levels). Join the sea cadets if possible, or get involved in some kind of sailing, it will give you an edge when you start training, things like ropes, knots, tides, the effect of wind, are all still relevant to a deck officers role.

              Thanks!

I'm doing maths and physics as well as a marine operations course for vessels under 24 metres. I've also had lots of work experience on two 100 ft ships and plan on doing more. I do sail solo with a club and I'm also involved in the Australian Army cadet and plan on going on a course next year to achieve the highest rank. Would it be beneficial to do Australian Navy cadets? Am i doing too much or am I on the right track?

              Cheers, Rhys

It sounds to me like you are on the right track. The extra curricular activities are what a lot of companies will look at when it comes down to deciding exactly who they want. Academics are all well and good, but doing things like the Cadets and learning how to sail show that you are willing and capable to work in a team and the fact that your working towards the highest rank of a cadet shows that you have some leadership ability as well.

As someone who has recruited several cadets, depending on your academics, you would probably be someone I would consider taking on.
