I was thinking why not produce a guide of ports for cadets and other crew. Any member who visits a port could write a couple of paragraphs. Nothing fancy simple stuff is their a seaman's centre, where is the nearest phone, is their anything interesting nearby, can I get a bus into town, that sort of thing. We could even use the old wiki allowing articles to keep improving as others visit the same port. With the number of members at sea I don't think it would be long before we could build quite a large database. Not to mention it would be useful to qualified types pulling more in and maybe they would help cadets here while they are passing?

So had a quick look round the interwebs.
Few options, depends how it wants to be done.
We could host it on a google site, sites like wikia or wikispace (both have adverts) or if CD or Alistair is up for a challenge, it could be hoated on the OC address using some other software, like the actual wikipedia.
Suggestions or comments?

However, before you go buying add ons or other bits and bobs, speak to CD first...I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.....

Two questions;
Don't your company have a ports database / file with this information in it? Maybe only cruise ships have it, but all the ships I've been on have had one.
And lastly; all information you seem to want is usually provided by your port agents (if you request it) in advance... I would suggest, if your ship doesn't already request it from agents, why not just start requesting it?
I accept that perhaps you guys have less helpful agents but, start of every season, or first call at a new port we request all information from our agents and we update our files.?Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn?t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.?

Not as far as am aware. Some ports do produce some nice glossy maps and leaflets many don't. I'm sure the agent would but on tanker generally only captain and mate deal with the agent. I think asking them to ask the agent would just get me told how they have more important things to do. We had some thick hard back books but they were very out of date and most of the information was commercial where marpol points, bunkering, fresh water, pilotage etc
Not to mention it would allow seafarers to share frank information with one and other. Also if it grows over time most likely some hidden gems off the beaten track would crop up.
