Hello everyone!
It's not often I ask much, and this one's quite cheeky.
Anyone who's been to Warsash or Southampton may be familiar with SS Shieldhall, a 1955 built steamship that now operates out of Southampton during the summer on short pleasure trips.
Shieldhall is a lovely little ship that I've volunteered on a few times, but there's now a danger that she may be converted into a static exhibit or scrapped completely if funding can't be put together for dry-docking in 2011. Scrapping would be a terrible situation and would mean many years of work would go down the drain, and the blood, sweat and tears I put into chipping and scraping paint off a deck vent last week would have been in vain!
So, what can you do?
If you're in the Southampton area, come to Berth 29 on Wednesdays or Saturdays at 10:00. To get there, go to Dock Gate 4, tell them you're going to Shieldhall and continue through the roundabout. Turn left onto European Way and keep going until you see the yellow signs. No booking required, just turn up with a boilersuit and preferably some safety shoes. It's also an idea to bring a packed lunch and you'll need ?10 on your first visit (for students, ?15 otherwise) to join the society. The guys on board are always happy to see new volunteers, especially cadets, and you can volunteer on deck or in the engine room.
If you don't have the time, or are too far away, then they'd really appreciate donations - it really doesn't have to be much, especially when you're a cadet and things are a bit tight, but every penny counts and even ?1 will help. To give you an idea, ?11 will pay for one minute of dry-docking.
There are a number of donation options:
By cheque directly to the society. Go to SS Shieldhall website.
By PayPal to OfficerCadet, who will pass donations on to the society. Go to our donation page.
Thanks for humouring me everyone and I'll be sure to keep everyone updated!
Chris
