  • Calmac

    Hi there,

I'm a new engineer cadet and have Calmac ferries as my sponsor. Hadn't really researched them as this wasn't my choice of sponsor. Just wondering if anyone has any experience dealing with them? Also I see that they are wholly funded by the government. Just out of interest, does anyone know if this affects their wages? Starting salaries etc.

    Cheers

Where you at the meeting in Glasgow on tuesday?
I distrust camels, and anyone else who can go a week without a drink.

        Re: Calmac

I do alot of sailing round mull etc on the west coast, and i've spoke to several locals who are in the MN and alot of them had started off with deep-sea companys and some stand-by and supply, and the majority all move back to the isles and work with calmac, and they say they much prefer them, so I think you should be ok, ideal for a cadetship i'd imagine.

Yeah, ive been looking into them a bit more and can't find any bad rep to be honest. Not the company I would of went for at first glance but maybe that was bad judgement on my part. I was obviously blindsighted by exotic destinations, when maybe the best option was a bit closer to home!

I wonder if they give you at least one deep-sea trip like the likes of Wightlink?

I have a contact within the P?rlamaid na h-Alba that works with the MSP responsible for transport and stuff... Calmac is a sound organisation to be sponsored by... very lucky!

theres always later on to go deep-sea, you'l probly find it more ideal with calmac. I don't know if there'd be any chance of doing a deep-sea voyage with them as they solely operate around the scottish isles, all though I know they occasionally come down to the mersey for servicing etc, so maybe you'd get a cheeky voyage further around the british isles!

I think CalMac is a top choice... but not for everyone. Many people over 30 would love to enjoy the benefits of being able to live in that part of the world. Dull to some; heaven to others...

I had some drinks with some calmac guys in Oban I think a while back, they seemed pretty happy living and working there.

I did some tallship sailing a few years back and Oban was the start point, the JDL, now its for sale.

Need to wash/bleach/paint those sails. Shocking.

I know lots about sailing, me! Hahaha.

I had some happy times on the JDL, its a shock to see its up for sale.

Amongst other things, I discovered the time delay between steering and the ship turning

and i got pretty drunk in Tobermory before it got renamed (Ballamory)
