  • Maersk

    Hi

I will be starting with Maersk soon as a cadet.

I am rather excited about the fact however I have one major worry, Other cadets have told me that at the end of my training Maersk will not provide me with a job. Now this was explained at the interview however I have also been informed even though I will be a qualified officer that no other company will employ me as I have no experience.

I am confused as the maersk contract states that cadets must work with the company for 2 years after they finish training and that if the company cant provide you a job they will seek to place you in employment with another company ( I assume Saf-marine or Norfolkline)

What is everyone's thoughts on this issue??

they will try all reasonable means to help you find employment... joy of this years intake is that by the time you're qualified the global economic trend should require more Officers due to more ships transporting more goods...

so you may well find yourself in demand

I start in September also, and they way I understood it was that currently, as things stand there are 72 cadets roughly 50% Deck and 50% Engine (Gods People). So thats 36 each persuation. they estimated at the interview around a 50% take on of each Trade so your looking at around 18 cadets for both Deck and Engine.

So all you have to do is make sure your in the top 50 percentile of your chosen trade.

The cream rises to the top, so to speak.

Unless, of course, this is an incentive initiative to ensure maximum effort from Cadets.

Surely in the Borg the most compliant rise to the top? You don't want to be upsetting "7 of 9"!

Does "reasonable means", include HR personnel suddenly telling cadets in the middle of the cadetship that there will be no jobs at the end of it? (reportedly), and also suddenly sprouting economics expertise and speculating about global macroeconomics like the legendary "bloke down the pub"?
Where are these economic masterminds when we need them?! They should have been running the banks all these years instead!

Trade is not only made up of containerised goods is it! So an economic upturn does not automatically mean an increase in containership orders. It may be that some consolidation takes place in the industry (since margins are tight, market share has to increase to sustain the life of the business in its life cycle), with further mergers due to economies of scale - which could mean redundancies.
Even if there is an upturn, and more officers are required, whose to say they won't be from Madras, Mariveles, Rijeka, or Odessa? It isn't the market that delivers jobs in the box-boat sector, but the regulations.

Suppose you need to consider the amount of people who will drop out half way through the course or who finish the training and then go ashore straight after into a management job or to drive a tug...... Work your erse off and do as your asked by the boss and it should be all good!!!
