  • Male personal grooming whilst working on a passenger ship

In my current office job I can get away with shaving my facial hair every other day with a fair bit of stubble by the 2nd day.

Are officers on passenger ships, who are likely to be in passenger areas, expected to be cleanly shaven at all times so to speak or could I get away with my current regime?

Depends on the cruise line to a certain extent I guess, but on Cunard you'd certainly be expected to be smart and clean shaven all the time. Your other alternative would be to cultivate a beard and just keep it neat.

I suppose it would depend on the company as well as the captain of the ship. As you're dealing with pax then of course you probably wouldn't be able to get away with your current regime. In the Warsash code of conduct for officer cadets it states:
"Any Officer Cadet who arrives for a lecture or activity improperly dressed, unshaven or poorly groomed will be excluded from that lecture or activity, and will result in WMA taking action in accordance with the disciplinary procedure".

I know this is for college and not for when on-board, but it must be similar and I personally wouldn't take the risk, that's my two cents.

It depends on the cruise line... although generally you would be expected to be clean shaven, showered at least once a day with clean clothes and clean shoes at all times and tidy hair! (or as size4 says some will permit beards / moustaches - but some have strict rules on this)

To the extreme some even specify what type of sun glasses you are allowed!

Do they specify hair length as well?!

I suppose as long as it's clean and tidy then should be fine... as long as its not stupidly long enough to become a sealth and hafety hazzard or be untamed by some bobbles and an Alice band

At college hair length for boys is specified as "above the collar". Though that was only really enforced in phase 1, on cruise ships though, I'd say you were on dodgy ground there.

They're terrifying! And sum up exactly why I don't want to work on cruise ships.

In the SSTG documentation it states "Hair is expected to be kept short, but in no case is it permitted to be over the collar, nor must it constitute a safety hazard".
