  • ENG 1 - Embarrassing issue

Hey I need some advice if you guys have time, I'm 10 kg overweight and I was wondering if that will affect my ENG 1 because apart from the 10 kg over weight I am perfectly healthy, I'm also a wiehgt lifter I've been lifting since I was 14 thank you

Unless you're at a weight where you have your own gravity, you'll be fine.

Doctors aren't idiots. If they see your healthy then that'll be fine. They don't really go by a chart like BMI cos it's utter pish.

the BMI chart, like gl said, is abit off the mark.
It doesn't take into account bone or muscle mass. The fact you say your a weightlifter could very well account for your "10kg" in muscle. The doctor will know this anyway mate.

          I wouldn't say that's embarrassing.

Getting excited during the cough and drop would be embarrassing...
I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.....

I am classed as over weight im 5'7 and weigh 16 stone but im not a big round blob or anything, I need to watch I don't get heavier all that would happen is my ENG1 would be reduced to 1 year and if I got even worse 6 month this is so they can keep tabs on your health. It has also been said you need to consider if you collapse down an enclosed space or down the bottom of a engine room or hold or anything really you will need to be physically lift out which is obviously harder to be done to the likes of me at 16 than some rake at 7 or 8 stone. I have heard (Cannot confirm) that there is some sort of step test done to people overweight to check they are fit. The doctor did say to me that the BMI is rubbish as im a stocky guy but it says my BMI is to high but if I was the weight I should be for my age I would look ill.

It's not just a step test, it's a series of test to simulate various on board environments to see if you have proper movement of your limbs and a certain amount of fitness.

What will happen in that is the doctor can issue you with a year instead of two years but its unrestricted.

I've seen people who are MASSIVELY overweight get ENG 1's with little more than a slap on a wrist - I don't think the ENG is nearly as strict as people think it is.

I don't find the ENG particularly strict, quite an easy medical in fact.

More important really is a lot of the bigger companies are doing their own medicals on top of the ENG certificate, and they tend to have stricter requirements. Chevron for one are implementing a BMI restriction, however being 10KG overweight would not restrict you from what I can see, and as the OP mentions he is a weightlifter then he will sail through for health I should imagine! The restrictions primarily are aimed at the seriously obese who are also unfit, ie those people who cannot fit through small hatches or move from ER to Bridge in a reasonable time, as might be expected during various kinds of emergency!

As an example, my last 1/E (who was Croatian incidentally) was well over 100kg, also a weightlifter and has no problem with the BMI regs so far. He was not overweight as in fat, just a lot of muscle!!

Unfortunately they are not all the same, some doctors will give people 1 year ENG’s for having a BMI of 30, some will shrug and pass you so long as you are fit enough to write the cheque.
