  • Just wandering..

Hi everyone, posting this in Anonymous just in case my sponsors or a certain Glasgow based training company take a dim view...
I am a few months into my first trip at sea on a RoRo, and so far i am really enjoying it!
My question was, is it possible to get a trip on an other ship type, for extra experience(RoRo's being very specialized)?
I have heard of some cadets changing sponsors half way through training so surely it will be possible... right?

The company you are with do they only operate Ro-Ro ? If no then you might be able to ask this certain based Glasgow company if they can ask your sponsor company. Changing Sponsorship is not as easy as it sounds ! I can imagine it would only be done in exceptional circumstances! So no if you are enjoying it then why move ? You can move around once you are qualified

It depends on what your sponsor operates and if they operate anything else other than RORO. They are able to place you on other companies vessels but that comes with an extra cost and is down to whether your sponsor is willing to pay it or not.

Changing sponsor? Not going to happen unless they go bust...

I did my cadetship with a certain Glasgow based training company and a large Dover based ROPAX sponsor... I requested to try out different ship types but I didn't get the opportunity. My T/O told me I might be able to do a trip with Royal Caribbean for some reason... I never heard anything on that front ever again!

You are always going to get type cast one way or another - Cruise / Ro-Ro / offshore etc. - in some ways Ro-Ro is probably one of the better ship types to get as a cadet.
If you are with a training organization, I doubt they intend to keep you one type of ship for the whole cadetship? - or have you been given to a Ro-Ro company for the whole thing?
Changing training companies... no. Bad idea. Qualify first, get a trip on a Ro-Ro under your belt then start thinking about something else if required

            Thanks for the the reply's!

When i see jobs getting advertised the always say "must have previous experience on this ship type", hence why i want a trip on another ship type.
Also there is absolutely no chance of my company taking me on, as they are in the process of replacing all the Europeans with cheaper labour.
