Is age a problem

i'm currently trying to get a cadetship with one of the training companies but having no luck.
are companies put off when they see someone older 27-28+? i have all the qualifications they ask for and done plenty of research into the life and role as a cadet/officer and about the different types of ships but never seem to get to the interview stage
i had an interview 10 years ago and they told me to get a couple more qualifications and a trade. so i got them
this is something i'v been wanting to do my whole life but feel i am getting nowhere

I'm sure it's not, there are plenty of older cadets. Maybe try refining you CV/application. It doesn't hurt to ask them for feedback. If you don't get in for September, tweak things and go for January. There are plenty of people on here that will be happy to help you with CVs and applications if you just ask. If you have all the qualifications, my guess would be that the fault lies within the application. Did you use appropriate English and grammar? You have to sell yourself, so if you're not being unique and just being generic in the application that could be an issue. But like I say, chase the companies. Ask them for feedback, maybe send your application to people on here to get their opinions!

Wide range of ages do the cadetship. There was one lad (well, man) who was 50 when he started when I was there. Anything from 22 - 35 is fairly common.

thanks for these replys, i got it in to my head that they were less likley to accept someone older as i was not geting any word back from any of them, i'll rework my cv and keep on trying

Age not a problem - I'm 34 and a phase 1 deck cadet. As others have said, the problem will be in your CV/application form. There are many cadets in their mid to late twenties in my intake.

I don't think age is a problem. I'm also a phase 1 cadet and i'm 32, i had the same worries as you when i applied but i made sure my CV was good and my cover letter explained what experience i had and how i could turn that into positives relating to becoming a cadet. I think the key is plenty of research and make a good application. Like jacob44 says there are a lot of people on here willing to help if you ask. Good luck.

I'm same as Stevemac83 - I'm 32 and only started my deck cadetship in January so age wasn't a barrier for Bibby. Not sure about the rest as I left it late in applying so I got quite a few rejections with no reason despite having a strong CV and a family background of dad and grandfather being at sea!
