  • What am I really getting into?

Hi all! I have been accepted with Shell as a Deck Cadet and would like to know about the contract. From what I read, I am liable to pay up to 50K if I do not finish my cadetship. Is this only applicable if I get kicked out etc or if I don't quite make the grade and fail exams? Any advice is appreciated as it is a big scare to read something like this.
    Thanks.

I'm not currently a cadet but I heard that if you fail your exams your company will basically kick you out without cost. So your not really trapped

It applies if you don't complete the cadet ship and receive your OOW CoC - regardless of the reason for not obtaining it.

I was a Shell cadet about 10yrs ago, out of the 10 of us, only 4 qualified, either through failing exams, quitting, or being sacked. No-one paid a penny.

I didn't realise Shell had a 'tie-in' now. I left after qualifying, they were very good about it.

I believe that if you fail your exams you do NOT have to pay anything back. However, if you get kicked out by the college or company then thats a different story but if you just don't manage to pass then you shouldn't have to pay anything back.

It would be helpful to have an actual company specify the rules!

If you fail the exams, you will be kicked out by the college. Welcome to the adult world.

Depends if they like you or not. The policy when I was a cadet was hilariously inconsistent. Know people who failed almost every exam we sat and many of them multiple times (5-6 times for example) and managed to get to the end. Whereas some people failed less exams and got fired. Was very strange.

To be fair you will never know your company policy until something happens, nothing is ever clear as a cadet!!
