Hi guys,

Do SSTG still pay for your accommodation whilst studying for a cadetship as well as paying you a training allowance, or has this changed?

Unfortunately SSTG do not pay for your accommodation, you have to pay for that yourself, (Unless the sponsoring company through SSTG pays it) this is due to the governments cut to the smart funding, however, all of the other stuff, such as tuition fees are all paid for. and they do give you a training allowance, which is ?600 a month (i think).

Training allowance varies by your actual sponsoring company, also some companies pay you directly instead of through SSTG. As far as I know the "standard" package is still ?600 a month though.

Is it only ?600 now?! I worked for a different sponsor company than SSTG but when I started three years ago our basic was ?700 (which rent came out of). Considering the price of halls has gone up at every maritime college in the UK in the last few years I'm glad I'm not starting out again!

Out of interest, how many pay your accommodation on top of your allowance?

I think North Star through sstg were the only one that payed for accommodation but I have heard they are not going to be doing so anymore.

When I was with SSTG they paid for accomodation, college fees etc, travel and on top of that gave you around ?416 which was your alcohol money and that other thing called food.

As im aware though, that has all changed and I think they just give you a fixed monthly allowance to pay for all your own needs.
