  • Eng1/ Medical q's

Hey guys and gals, just a quick question. Provisionally, I'll be starting at WMA in September under SSTG as a deck cadet. Providing I get through my interview in a month's time, when could I expect to have to take (pass) an ENG1 and/ or Medical? How far ahead of starting the course would I have to pass a D&A test, or is this just when I'm actually at the college- in which case all is gravy.

They want the Medical does asap so they can start processing forms, D&A tests are random not a requirement

So one could expect a D&A at any point after a successful interview/ offer? Or at any point after start date?

      Thanks for the reply

Yup just at any time at all, could be the 2nd week into phase 1 or could be a day before your exams, just any time at all really

Yup. They could demand one on day one or day 350, it truly is random (unless you give them a reason to test you).

You've not been taking naughty things have you?

From a young cadet that was on my ship, he said they tested at least once per college phase, always at the start. Companies don't have the money to frequently test people.

              Thanks for the responses guys.

Not worried at all about any tests whilst at college- I'll indulge in a few drinks on the weekends but I wouldn't put myself in a position to jeopardise my training.

I'm just concerned about actually getting onto the course in the first place- so 100% no d&a tests as part of the medical or before day one of the course?

As I say, I want to keep the past in the past and the last thing I want to do is lose my place when I've worked hard to get there..but on the flipside I don't want any decisions made now to prevent me from starting from the get go.

GM- I'd say alcohol is more naughty than what I like to partake in, but that's another topic for another thread (one that I see has been covered more than a few times on this site..)

Just like to say this forum has been invaluable to me thus far and I'll be creating an account soon enough- just didn't feel like receiving judgement on my first post!

You'd be surprised. I was tested about 5 or 6 times during one college phase alone, others more so...

Cheers for the clarification, Chief- I'll sign up shortly

Just to reiterate, when and if I progress drugs of any sort (aside from the odd bacardi breezer) will be absent from my regime, and certainly not dabbled with anywhere near the water.

Could somebody be so kind as to clear up the last of my concerns raised in my earlier post?

Blondie, thankyou for the advice however being 21 and out of uni I've learned a few lessons along the way- I'm strictly talking about before any paperwork is signed.

Defo no drug test in the ENG1 medical, the piss in the cup section is testing other stuff so don't worry. The companies can drug test you but generally don't before you start.

The ENG 1 does not look for drugs, there are no blood tests if you are fit and healthy.
If you apply to a company they may ask you to attend a D&A test prior to giving you a position, although in my experience this is not the norm.
In all my time at sea / college I have never been given a random D&A test... but as some other posters have said, you could get three in the first month!
