  • When you first start is it easy to make friends?

I have never experienced starting somewhere new with no friends, is it hard to make new one's? Also will there be people who interested in the same things as me? Don't know what college or wether or not i'm even in yet, but very anxious

It's easy if you try! Don't expect people to come and find you, go and find people, smile and make eye contact, say Hi! Go and knock on the doors of your fellow hall inmates and say "Hello I'm [Insert first name here], I'm next door to you/down the hall. What's your name?" Ask people questions: where are you from, how was the journey here? DO YOU FANCY A PINT? (This is the best icebreaker!) Hopefully, they'll ask you the same things and conversation will flow naturally from there. Ask if they plan on doing any hobbies/enrichment program stuff while at college, ask how they're feeling about being away from home, is it the first time away or are they used to it? How do they deal with it?

One thing I can promise you is that EVERYONE is in the same boat when they go to college, you're all strangers, you're all nervous, you're all wanting to make friends. IF you hide away and keep yourself to yourself, yes making friends will be difficult, people will see you as stand offish and antisocial. If you do the things I suggest above, making friends will be easy!

Oh and, you're all starting the same course.... of course there will be common interests!!

Also, and I can't believe I forgot to say this before, you can meet people on here before you go!! Register and start getting to know the folks you may end up at college with!

Like Size4 mentioned, it is easy when you try. I can't imagine what I would be doing if I wasn't out and about with my marine lot - probably working or on the laptop like now!

However, within the first week of starting it was my 18th Birthday. I was the only one who thought a pub crawl at 11:00 was a bad idea... It was...

After the 'events' that occurred during that morning, afternoon and evening, I was given the nickname 'Birthday'.

Anyway! Definitely join the site and start a roll call thread. You will have great subjects to talk about such as the interviews.

I agree with everything that Size4 has already said. I have been there before, starting a course away from home with no friends. I have yet to find someone who has wanted to ostracise themselves from the rest of the group from the get go.

Make effort early on in first week if not first day. Becomes harder the longer you wait.

ps who wants friends with the same interests get some friends with weird and out their interests.

oh and once you move in if you see other people moving in offer to give them a hand shifting their bags and boxes etc. Good way to break the ice.
