  • A question about... Food...

Hi guys, this is my first post here and I know its probably in the wrong section, but I don't want to create an account for myself until I have my SQA Standard Grade results next tuesday. Don't want to jump the gun too much.

But my question is this, what sort of food is served on ships? I can be a very fussy eater and just wondered what sort of dishes are served up for those working at sea?

Depends on the ship, who the chef is and sometimes the chefs nationality

Fish, fish and some more fish if serving with Filipino's although how good the actual food is can be rather hit and miss as I've had some fantastic ones and some god awful ones....

Quick fact: The most important person on board is not the Captain or the Chief Engineer. It's the cook.
I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.....

I'm vegetarian and I have never gone hungry on a ship. I have on occasion had to make do with a plate of spinach and rice for lunch, but I have never gone hungry.

To be honest, spinach and rice is fantastic, everyone should try it.
          Go out, do stuff

It can be so varied depending on the type of ship, the nationality of crew and the competency of the chef that you really can't afford to be fussy.
            Chiefly the chief

Like GM says the cook is the main man , you don't want a pissed off chef!

As for food wise , it totally depends on what ship your on for factors like ; Nationality , budget , crew , chef nationality.

I've only sailed with British , Irish and Polish cooks and there has been a range of : terrible **** to fantastic 5 star hotel stuff ...

One of the lads on my last ship HATED fish of any form. All he did was talk to the cook when he got on and the cook sorted him something different when seafood came on the menu.

The food onboard 90% of the boats ive been on has been spot on.

                  For example:

Breakfast - porridge, bacon, eggs, pancakes, cereal, fruits etc

Lunch - choice of 2 meals and soup with fresh baked bread.

Tea - Anything left over from lunch plus another meal like roasts, lasagna, curry, stuffed chick breast served with sides such as rice, chips, potato's, mix of veg etc.. fridays always fish and sundays fillet steak cooked to order! puddings every second day..

Always a mixture of cold meats and cheeses in the mess fridge plus bread, cereal, biscuits etc if you fancy a little snack!

Cant complain! The odd dodgy meal (trout in jelly... must be a polish thing!) but there's always options...
