  • Made a mistake - wrong grades on application

So I filled in my application form for CMT a while back, not thinking anything of it I put in my grades that were appealed. Now that I've been asked to come for an interview, in the email it says to bring all my qualification certificates. So when they're going to look at it they'll see grades below of what I put in my application form.

Will it seem to them like I've lied? How do I get round this? Do I write in advance to let them know and not have to awkwardly explain it in the interview?

    Any help would be appreciated.

If you sent the application off before you received your grades (ie: You entered predicted grades) then there is no problem - just explain this to them.

If you sent the application off after receiving your grades, then yes, you will have some explaining to do... Do your actual grades meet the minimum requirements? If so then just explain that some of them were appealed and you have wrongly put the appealed grades in - one assumes your appeal was unsuccessful or is still pending - other than that there is not much else you can say other than "I lied" - whats done is done, nothing you can do about it now except be honest.
?Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn?t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.?

So you appealed against the grades that you already recieved, lost the appeal and reverted to the grades you had in the first place? If that's what this is then it's a case of counting chickens before they hatch ect. Will be tough to explain but being honest really is your best and only chance

Yeah, that's pretty much it except I did get appealed for all of them but I never heard from maths (Final C) but I looked at the CMT entry requirements and it doesn't say it has to be over a B although a lot are quite specific that maths is a B.

Yeah I spoke to my teacher and he said that as well. Just explain to them the misunderstanding and they might be able to understand. On top of my grades though I do have a very nautical background and am content of getting into the merchant navy industry.

I have to say that there are some things that you can mess around with on a CV, but exam grades are not one of them. I interviewed a lady three weeks ago for a job. We took her grades at face value on both her CV and application form. However, we then discovered that she had lied about her grades. I withdrew her offer on that basis.

You will have to be honest when you go in and hope they will be very understanding, however you may have to expect they will be a bit harsh about the grades. If you had put down your real grades and put in a letter explaining you were appealing them, or even if they had been predicted grades you could have got away with it.

without trying to be too off-putting, I personally think you'll struggle with a C in maths. A mate of mine applied a few years ago with a C and didn't get in anywhere (they told him to go re-sit maths) and it's even more competetive for places now. On top of that you're going to have to go into that interview and explain that YOU made a mistake (don't try to blame anybody else). I honestly do wish you the best of luck, but I would start looking into a re-sit for maths either to stregnthen this years application or as a contigency plan should you not make it this time round. Hope it works out for you in the end.

God damn it! I was so happy until this wee problem cropped up. Would any of use recommend emailing them first to save the awkwardness of explaining it at the interview? Or just reapplying with my grades on my certificate??

My thoughts - email and explain, that way you are being honest and not wasting an interviewers time. When I have interviewed if I saw something fishy it would automatically start me digging deeper and expecting more from the candidate.

Got to go with the consensus here, get on the phone / e-mail apologise and explain whats happened, and then throw yourself on their mercy, as they have invited you for an interview they maybe see something worth interviewing....no matter, honesty is THE BEST policy

You wont be the first or the last, worse case they suggest you increase your maths grade and try again later

No I do not report things from here to them as they are quite able to come and read this stuff for themselves.

How do you propose I do this?

As Chiefy says, be a little cautious with the amount of detail. Don't forget that some companies monitor these forums and so the person you are contacting may already be awaiting your call/email and therefore you need to be honest because if you tell them one thing and they have read the forum you will just compound the error when they put 2 and 2 together.

                          Good Luck

Okay so I did end up emailing them. Then they phoned me and I explained it in a wee bit more detail and they said well you sign up to SQA and they will be able to send you out evidence of the appeal which you can bring along to the interview. So I got onto SQA started signing up and it said that to activate the account they're going to send out a letter and there will be an activation code I use to complete the sign up. This was a wee bit of a stress as it could take a week for it to get here and the interview was fast approaching, and maybe another week for them to send out the appeal evidence. I typed in my Scottish Candidate Number and got my address from that but it was my old house. So I said no you'll need to change it with the school, I thought bugger that it'll just take longer. So I thought I'll have the activation code sent to my old house and I'll go and get it in a week.

I went roughly a week later and the woman gave me an SQA envelope and I said thanks just what I came for. Then when I was leaving I looked at the date and it went back to November last year. Then it turned out that that was the updated certificates of the appeals. So that explains all the confusion of what got appealed and what not, if only I got it when I was meant to back in November.

I hope someone reads this, took my time typing it out. Bugger going through it though haha hope there's no spelling or grammar mistakes.
