  • Coming ashore after college

Does anyone know what job prospects are like for someone coming ashore with the Marine Operations foundation degree but without an OOW CoC? Does it get much better after doing the top-up to the BSc? What sort of job positions / salaries are realistic if coming ashore directly after a deck cadetship?

I don't think this should really be in the Anon forum to be honest, but hey ho.

Job Prospect? Not great because a lot of the shoreside positions within the deck side require you to have actual operations experience. There are a lot of job options available (e.g. crewing, P&I, etc), but realistically, you're going to need to start as an assistant of sorts and salary would probably be around ?20,000pa.
I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.....

I allowed it through on the basis that a current cadet might not want to hint to their sponsor that they are planning on not going to sea at all

Yes I work for the big blue canoe company.
No I do not report things from here to them as they are quite able to come and read this stuff for themselves.

There was a lecturer at Glasgow for a while who had completed a CoC and BSc but had never sailed as OOW. That is one possible option, but may require completing the CoC. The pay is not attractive. You really want to at least get the CoC (and preferably a trip or two) and then there are more options.
