Has anyone ever changed careers?

Hi all, I'm an eto cadet with a well known cruise line. When I applied to do a cadetship I was in two minds about whether I wanted to be an eto or a deckie. I'm currently in my second sea phase and whilst I like what I've been doing so far, there is still a part of me that wishes I'd done the deck route (chance to be captain etc!)

I was wondering therefore if anyone has or has heard of anyone changing after qualifiying? Apparently there used to be dual engineering and deck certificates years ago and on the MCA website it mentions other routes to an oow coc other than a deck cadetship http://www.dft.gov.uk/mca/mcga-mnoti...651723F6A14382. In reality how practical is this? has it ever been done?

Dual certification has been phased out. You're either one or the other.

You could, with your sea time, go directly for the OOW, I'm sure someone will be along to give you time frames.

I would suggest you finish your cadetship, because you won't get the funding to start again- at least you'll be able to fund any potential career ladder hopping.

The OOW Examination route requires your sea time is done holding an appropriate position - normally as an OS or AB.
