Hi guys and girls looking for some advice,

My first Sea trip lasted only a couple of weeks on a Ro-Pax, there was NO DSTO (Designated ship training officer) on board as they don't usually take cadets.

In my TRB I have got everything filled out including of course the testimonial from the Chief EO and he also filled out the review of progress section which is a monthly thing and just put in that i was only on board for a couple of weeks. However as there was no DSTO on board I don't have a review for that section. Will this matter? Everything else is filled out correctly, sample signatures, tasks, familiarisation, ships particulars,Chiefs testimonial etc

A DSTO is not always a specific person who is on the ship solely for that reason. Normally your DSTO is the one who gives you your jobs of a morning/watch and will go through the TRB with you. For instance, on the ships I was on as a cadet it was normally the 2nd Engineer as he doled out the jobs that needed doing and went through my TRB, to confirm that the other Officers were signing off my tasks correctly.
I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.....

All posts here represent my own opinion and not that of my employer.

Right I see, well I asked on the ship about the DSTO and was told that there simply wasn't one, nobody made me aware at Pre Sea Induction that there wouldn't always be a DSTO and that actually the 2nd Eng could be considered your DSTO.

Like I said I have the Ships Particulars filled out, Ships Familiarisation (complete with Chiefs signature), Specimen signatures, Monthly review from Chief and finally the Testimonial from the Chief all with ship stamps etc. The only think I don't have is this DSTO monthly review, although i wasn't even on the ship that long! Are you aware if this will cause any problems with my CTO (Company training officer) or the MCA itself?

I was told that failure to complete the TRB correctly could lead to action being taken against you by your training company, although I'm sure that is for more serious cases like failing to get a testimonial....

No mate this won't matter, my first review was only about 7 words anyway. on my first ship I didnt even have my DSTO sign the officer signature page and he had signed quite a bit of my TRB, but the MCA didnt care. just make sure you get the rest done for your other trips, which im sure you will do.

Don't worry about it - as long as you got the testimonials and the "Master (or I assume Chief Engineer review)" box's filled in it will be fine. Just advise your training officer next time you meet with them.
