Gaining skills while doing a cadetship...

Officer cadet here; commencing studies in September.

I know that my role as a deck officer is paramount; and that my attention should be focused on completing the training for that; but-

How likely is it- as, not only a cadet, but after I am qualified as an officer that I would be able to pick up engineering skills?

I realize that I will never have any official qualifications in the field but, I am eager to pick up some skills to enable me to work on my own yacht engine etc...I know the engines are entirely different, but I was hoping to swat up enough to be able to do my own servicing etc.
