Hi, I'd like to emigrate to Australia when I get my OOW deck COC. Does anyone have any advice about getting a coastal/offshore etc job in Australia or any job links for a 3rd mate? I've had a look round the internet but really can't find much info.

    Thanks

Does Australia have an offshore industry in the sense of how we understand it, i.e. working on PSVs, FPSOs, standby vessels etc? I think fishing and mining is where the money is in Australia, not in offshore work. Of course, you could always live in Australia and 'commute' to different offshore jobs around the globe, but also be aware that Australian tax rules are different to UK rules, so their govt may require you to pay tax. And there's the whole other problem of getting a residency visa in Australia if you then intend to bugger off round the world not putting money into their economy.

Also their unions are very strong and have some funny rules about who can work for who.

My uncle owns multinational fertilzier company based in OZ ill ask him who he uses to ship to SA and to Japan. If he says we have our own fleet then you can start being my friends now.

Hess Drilling and Chevron have quite a big presence in WA and both have supply and survey ships as far as i'm aware. The Gorgon Project is getting going over there also which will create a few job i would imagine. Sorry I can't help with any job info but will ask my mates who work offshore out there and post if they come back with anything. I have just spent 2 years in Perth and can highly recommend it as as nice place to live.

CSL shipping also have a presence there too.

If I remember correctly, to get a residency visa you had to hold either a Master's ticket or an EOOW ticket as those were the skills they were in short supply of. This is from a year or two ago so it may have changed...
