I'm about to join a ship which is crewed with Russian officers and ratings. I have not sailed with Russians before so I'm just wondering if anyone has any general advice on how to fit in with them and how not to offend them.

Make sure that when you walk up the gangway, you give a cheery "Blyad" to duty rating. This is basically a Russian "What ho" or "aloha" sort of thing and will really go down well. Also, the word for Captain in Russian is "Suka". Use that term and that term only and they'll respect you quite a bit for bothering to learn some of the language.

Other than that, they're easy enough to get along with and pretty much like us, they just drink more Vodka than we do...
I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.....

I've chatted with Russians socially and have found them to be friendly and interested in foreigners but have never worked with them so can only offer general advice which is to try and learn some basic phrases from a russian-english phrase book before you go and they'll appreciate you made the effort.

True, but your advice is less likely to result in injury...

              Непослушный GuinnessMan!!

Just spent five painful minutes having the other half spell that out. "No, upside down P!!"

              Using Google Translate next time.

I've been given a copy of Rosetta Stone level 1-3 Russian and given strict instructions to use it at sea.

Why Russian? Why not learn Latvian? Best thing I learnt whilst drinking with my Portugese colleague was "Šis kungs par visu samaksās"....

In fairness, Russian is also a bit more useable.

I came here asking for advice, and no one seems to want to give some. Fair enough if you don't want to, but why try and joke and get me to say russian profanity? I am disappointed guys

You will work with a variety of nationalities while at sea - sometimes you'll be the only brit onboard... like everything if you go in and are friendly, respectful and put in effort - show you are keen to learn / work and you'll get on fine with them.

Yer, there are anti-social buggers at sea, but most people are fairly sociable!
