  • Changing colleges?

Hey, currently first phase deck officer in Glasgow. Stay in halls of residence. And have been thinking of switching college as I'm not liking it here. Is it unheard of to switch colleges? Either mid phase or Inbetween phases?

I don't want to bring it up to my training officer until I'm certain I want to go. And if it can be done how do I go about it?

    1. All the colleges run their courses differently, so you might end up missing something that you've not done at Glasgow but the course you joined had done already.
    2. Companies have set numbers of student places allocated at each college and these days they get filled up, so there may well not be a place at another college you could have.
    3. Students are often under the impression they chose to go to a certain college, when in fact they were sent there by their company. It might have been your first choice anyway, thus giving the impression that they bent over backwards to accomodate you, but, these college spaces are generally filled up on a first come first served basis, or, they like to send you to a college at the far end of the country from where you live so you get used to being away from home, depends on the company.
    4. You can ask, but I wouldn't hold my breath mate.

      "My Job"

It's not my place to run the boat
the fog horn I can't blow.

It's not my place to say just where
      the boat's allowed to go

It's not my right to dock the boat
      or even clang the bell

      But let the damn thing
start to sink AND SEE WHO CATCHES HELL!

Under normal circumstances your company dictates which college you go to, there is no choice in the matter.

most companies want you to succeed, so if there is a serious problem with glasgow then talk to your sponsor/manager although it may be something as drastic as starting a fresh in a janurary intake. It will be up to you to reason with them that the change will get round this problem, if you want to move closer to home then they might start wondering how your going to do at sea etc. You do really need to say why your not enjoying it and why you think that moving will overcome the problem.

Most colleges by phase three have space due to people dropping out, but talk to your company they will be used to people having problems
you can take it with a pinch of salt, but i prefer it with a nip of whisky

Really? I was under the impression you at least had a preference of where to go?

So is it names out of a hat to choose who goes where?

Not at all. Some companies do indeed have preferred training colleges; others aren't too fussed and effectively do let you choose.

Depending on Company it's normally "somewhere away from home" so that you get used to being away from friends and family and what not...

Other than that, it's all down to where they want you.

As has been said, talk to your company. I'm sure if you explain your situation they would understand.

Some companies like to break the 'home bond' by sending you to a college that's pretty far from where you live. However this is not a hard and fast rule for all companies and not much in this world isn't up for at least a little negotiation.

If you talk to the company and tell them why you would like to be able to get home easily at times then they can think about it. There is the possibility that they might say may say 'you won't be able to pop home at the weekend while you're at sea.' But you can only ask.

                              To boldly go.....
