  • Moving from Engine to Deck.

I've been an Engine Cadet for not long over a month now and although I'm really enjoying my cadetship I'm wondering more and more whether Engine is the right dept. for me. For a variety of reasons, a few of which being its not exactly what I thought it would be, its not a massive issue and I can do it, the issue is I worry that if I just continue on what if I don't like engine in the long run.

What im tryign to get at anyway, what are the chances of switching from Engine to Deck, with it being still early days, also with CMT.

    Thanks in advance

Have you asked your Liaison Officer at CMT? If you're only a month in you haven't really done much(which of itself makes me ask how on earth you know it's for you or not as you haven't actually been on a ship yet), so from a practical perspective, it's possible but may involve waiting for the start of the next deck intake rather than simply swapping. However think very carefully as there are potentially bad consequences from asking for such a significant change.

Yeah I know, I'm fully aware that I should be grateful of what I already have, which don't get me wrong I really am, its just I imagine that it may complicate matters even further if I waited until after my sea phase and wanted to change with SMART funding etc.
I've not asked the officer as of yet, rather not make a mountain out of a molehill when theres not even a pile of dust yet, just wanted to know if anyone had done it/know anyone who has and what the transition is like but thanks for the advice

I feel it wont be as easy as just swapping classes, it would be probably done as starting a new cadetship at the next suitable intake, however at that point your going up against new applicants so would have to work harder to prove that its something that you really want and that in a month in you wont be having similar issues. they could also charge you for any costs that this cadetship has cost them, which is standard practice if you fail to complete a cadetship. even if you then come back to do another one.

talking to CMT wont in its self have any bad sideeffects, they need you to complete it for them to make money, but i would imagine that your more likely going to get talked into staying with engineering rather than moved easily.

might be worth thinking why deck is now more appealing instead og the ENg, and talk to people on here about it, you might find that with more knowledge of the deck it becomes a lot less appealing
you can take it with a pinch of salt, but i prefer it with a nip of whisky

Engineers are cooler, I hereby request you stick to engineering.

However, reading back on this issue before it has been said to have happened (transfers).

If you're at STC, maybe they could move you ASAP, seeing as the deck cadets here have only been doing short courses so far I think.

If you do go over to the dark.....deck side, then we will insult you mercilessly.

However, i know several who have come to us and it's not been much of a hassle normally, however they did have to restart their cadetship...

Yeh, weirdo deckies. How do they celebrate crossing the line? By covering each other with grease and other muck. For fun. Us bilge dwellers get to do that every day.

What's that? I can't hear you over the gentle sound of lapping waves whilst I sit on deck sipping my Martini!

Sipping my martini whilst ramming the ship into another or parking it on the beach!
