  • sacked from cadetship 5 years ago

Hi guys, I got sacked from a cadetship 5 years ago. I Allready had the u.s. sea going visa in my old passport which ended up going through the wash. I recently just finished my degree and want to apply for another cadetship. What i want to ask is if i have to tell people weather i was a cadet before or i can just leave that as a secret. I am wondering with the sponcership and the visa issue weather or not it is bound to come up or not.

any help would be enormously helpfull.

You may come across some issues with the SMART funding scheme the government run, I'm not really sure how that all work, but it'll no doubt catch you out

What happened to end your first cadetship?

Basically, i had a lot of personal troubles at the time. One night we went ashore and i had too much to drink and got in a row with an AB. I am a twat i know but it was a realy isolated instant. Do you know of anyone who has gotten a second chance after something like this. It was 5 years ago and i have a degree now.

You need to be honest with what ever companies you apply to as if you dont and they then find out your past they would be pissed,

Given that we've heard on here of from a few people who are starting 6 months later than they would like becasue companies are full, i think your going to strugle, While yes youve got a degree (is it related to the the cadetship you would be doing) and 5 years more sense from what you've said i think companies would be wary of sending you on a ship, i know a few people who are fine in real life but take them to sea for a month and they stop being so much fun.

From a personal point of view if i had the space and interviewed you i might offer you a place, if i had another candidate for the same place with no known history but he seems keen for the job I would give it to him. It may also depend on what terms smart funding is given out and also what the company stands to loose if you dont complete the course
you can take it with a pinch of salt, but i prefer it with a nip of whisky

Get some applications in and see what comes back. It may not be favourable, but honesty is most definitely the best thing.

The details of how SMarT funding works are in a recent MGN (somewhere on this site), I'm not sure if it's an unlimited fund that they can dip into, it may be that a cadet can only get it again on a discretionary case by case basis.

MGN stands for Marine Guidance Note. They are released by the MCA. An MSN is information on new statute information (New Laws) and MIN's are Marine Information Notices.

The MGN dawg is talking about (MGN 431) is here: http://www.dft.gov.uk/mca/mgn_431.pdf

Also, thought I'd add that you have to contact SMarT by phone, then email them a letter explaining your situation, and they'll decide whether you can get the funding again. As long as you have the SMarT funding, it should be no bother finding a company...

                        reply

A cadet in my year was previously fired and managed to get another cadetship with a different company (he did something fairly dangerous at sea). However, I would advise honesty is the best policy. Try to turn the event into a positive - it must be surely, as you have hopefully become more mature since then, since you now have a degree and this is a few years later etc etc. As far as I remember, the latest MGN (marine guidance notice) that mentions SMART funding just says that the funding for cadets going for their first coc will still be available, it just won't be available for officers going for their next ticket - unless there is money left in the pot from the fund for cadets.
I would think that you just have to secure a place and the funding will still happen, but I would advise you ask the question to the relevant advisor, as I am no expert on whether there is funding for people who have previously started cadetships. However, I think the cadet in my year on his second try gets funded.

Do all companies use SMART funding?
