Hello I'm interested in becoming an ETO particularly on a cruise ship and was wondering whether there were any ETOs out there who could share their experience of what the work is like? Also do ETOs work watches like deck officers or are they day workers?

Re: ETO on a cruise ship?
NO, ETO's wander about the ship fixing people's TVs, the computer system, the radars, the fire detection system, the satellite connection, and stuff.... Saw an ETO cadet folder the other day (green jobbie) and there was no engine room stuff in it at all. There seem to be two ways of going at it - pure ETO (green folder) which is purely electrical stuff, or engine cadet with some ETO stuff added in (purple folder), for which you will do all the engineering stuff plus the 'leccy bits, so would probably get your thirds ticket, which would make you more employable, I would have thought. Any ETO's/Ginger-beers able to confirm/laugh at a deckie's viewpoint of this?

Re: ETO on a cruise ship?
Um....
ETOs on the rest of the merchant fleet are primarily responsible for the maintaining the electrical systems on the engines. They do spend most of their time in the engine room. It's just on cruise ships, they have alot of ancillary duties as there is so much else in the way of electrical equipment.
ETOs are also responsible for the maintainence of the GMDSS equipment on the bridge, while operational tests are carried out by the officer of the watch there are some SOLAS required tests, such as the battery drainage tests that have to be completed, us deckies lake the technical knowhow to perform these tests.
ETOs on cruise ships are also in charge of a large number of technical staff who are the guys fixing TVs and hotel equipment. The ETOs are more involved in the organisation of such maintainence rather than carrying it out themselves
To boldly go.....

Re: ETO on a cruise ship?
The ETO officer side of the technical department usually has a SETO and his first ETO who are responsible for electrical systems on ship. Then we have two 2nds, one is hotel and one is engine room related. Then we have a 3rd who is lifts and other smaller jobs.
They each do a 'duty day' and are on call via pager for 24 hours. They have nothing to do with watchkeeping and theyre jobs are usually determined by defects reported by watchkeepers.

At the mo there are no "extra" CoC exams/study to take.
They can earn a good salary without the stress of being "in charge"?
Good leccy jobs shoreside?
